'Normal' (well I think these are actually a minority) keep Linux as a hobby, but still goes outside his door, and has real-life social circles... ie goes out with his friends etc
a nerd (who refers to himself as 'geek') is someone who doesn't see linux as a hobby but a way of life. Saterday night: the nerd is syncing his newly written kernel patch with the CVS server. Aided with a pizza box next to his monitor. Sitting in his underwear because he couldn't be bothered dressing up because he just had his 'eureka' moment on fixing a kernel bug.
Don't take this as offence tho _________________ generatesig |

Wow! How appropriate your avatar looks when you asks that. I mean, risking being split by your katana, people should think twice. _________________ To err is to be human, don't forget to include "errno.h" in your consciousness. |

Katana? How did you know I was part Japanese? Actually, I am holding an Ottoman sword which belongs to my friend in Istanbul. |

Makes sense. Risking being completely inaccurate, it kinda looks like a scimitar. _________________ To err is to be human, don't forget to include "errno.h" in your consciousness. |

Actually I am not sure what kind of sword it was. I took it off the wall and had my friend pose for the picture (yeah, there is a person at the end of the sword). |

Gentoo has taken precious time away from web development for me. I need to spend some time on revising my sites with CSS this week. |

I don't have a social life, linux takes all my time (I can't even enjoy a meal without leaving it and going back to my computer)
Does that make a geek out of me? No, I don't think so, I love linux, and that is a different matter. In the same way when I was a teenager and I was in love I didn't want to be away for a moment from my darling. Did that make a geek out of me?
Now another consideration.
Let's not mix up:
1) Geeks, whatever that means.
2) Developers/experienced administrators. They are most definitely not geeks, as they like to install an operating system as fast and easy as they can. I know a few of them, their time is too precious.
3) Hackers. Only the most experienced among developers deserve this high, noble title. They are most definitely NOT geeks, they are among the elite of the human race! |

Posing with a bigass sword on your avatar definatly makes you a total geek. Sharing to the world that you are a former marine that can kick peoples butts even makes the case stronger.
See some people just go home and * the prom queen, no need to put a show on, if you got it.
Sorry dude I just had to say something.. _________________ ---------

In a certain way, yes.

You talk as if being called a geek is per definition being cussed. I think a _lot_ of people in the #2 and #3 groups will be classified 'geek' by me. They can, of course, still be nice, decent and noble people.

That's rubbish!

That sounds even less close to my idea of geeks!

iKiddo, well perseption differs, I just call it like I see it. Anyone eager to prove that they are bigger, better or stronger then anyone else, just look like a poser to me.
I'm not a Don Juan, all I'm saying is that there is no need to tell people how good you are, they'll notice it. Maybe you'll get it some day =)
C'mon you take the time to photograf your self posing with a sword, wearing a shirt, looking like one of them dudes in the old American Ninja movies. Using eather a digital camera or scanning the photo into your computer, rezising it to the appropriate size. Uploading it as an avatar to the gentoo site. Sorry to break it to you, that's geekish.
You seem to think that being a geek is a bad thing, to me it's just not posing to bee cooler then you are. I tend to think all people are geeks, it's just that some seem so very eager to cover it up.
I know plenty of marines that are total geeks, so I have no idea why that would have to do anything with geekness. But saying it in the sence that it would make you less of a geek just makes things worse =)
Just fess up dude you're a geek and you love it! _________________ ---------

If you look closely, that is my digital camera case strap in the picture. My Turkish friend took this picture. I was a bit surprised with my facial expression. This is actually one of my common Avatar pictures. I have another one taken with me snorkling in Hawaii that I think is cool too.

Ouch!!! Damn you picked up on a good one. People do not realize that Marines are no dumb bumpkins anymore.

I installed Gentoo on my parent's machine, which they use exclusively (and very happily, I'll add) and they're anything but "computer geeks". Does that count? _________________ Public theme/config/doc resource: www.hewphoria.com |

Seriously now: I consider myself a person that knows more "things" (not always useful ones) that the rest of the people, and tend to be with the same "kind" of people. According to me, in both definitions I'm no geek.

Please define geek. As far as I'm concerned, if your using Linux (or any Unix-like OS) then you're a geek. To me a geek is someone that's enthusiastic about science and/or technology and has absolutely nothing to do with the way they look. |

Defintion of Geek:
Geek = Linux User particularly those who use Gentoo and/or Debian distros.
