Okay ... where to start.

I am looking at buying the new Sony SZ, It seems to be one of the few to have everything I want, glossy screen, widescreen, small but not 12" small. and most importantly an nvidia v-card, but that is also my problem with this laptop.

Take a look here if you want to read Sony's marketing blurp about it, it actually makes sense. But I wonder how this will work in xorg. If someone has one, please speak up, I would love to hear about it.

What it looks like to me, and what my gut tells me about it, it is a hardware switch, much like those for wireless cards, when it is in the power mode, it sends the signals to the nvidia card, when it is stamina mode, it sends the signals to Intel.

Now assuming that linux does work with this, my guess is I will have to choose my v-card before I go into X. What would be cool is if I could actually set up to Screens in my X.org, one with the intel and one with the nvidia, and then the switch on the laptop is much like a laptop and just switches between the two.

Now I am also wonder about 'how' good the intel 950 is, can it support Xorg's composite stuff, or will it be to slow ... hmm, I need to do some more reading.

If you have any other ideas, or actual experience with this set up, please let me know.

Thanks

small update :: i read in a notebook forum, that the switch would require a reboot to become effective. If this is true, it should work find with linux.

I'm searching for a notebook. The Sony VAIO Z-Series seems to be good (Link).
Did anyone test one of this notebooks with Gentoo (or another Linux distribution)?
How does the switch between 'Stamina-Mode' and 'Speed-Mode' work? Or does it work at all?
(Starmina-Mode -> Intel GMA shared | Speed-Mode -> Geforce 9300M GS)

Yes, the switch works only when rebooted, no matter is you use windows or linux. I've got a vgn-sz5mn. I use a script to detect the active video card and switch xorg-configs during boot time (and doing some other stuff). Works perfectly so far. I posted them some time ago in this forum, but I can repost if needed.

BTW: I'm very happy with this laptop, I suits me very fine!

EDIT: Ooops, I answered a two year old post! But hannibal_fg maybe needs this info.
