Ok weird problem
I lent my moniter to my mum for a week and ive got it back and whenever i try and login it says "invalid login" and doesnt let me enter a password. It says this when i try 'root' and my day to day user. Wierded still I am able to loging via ssh useing either user. I have been updating to ~x86 over that period (relivent?).
Any help would be great |

same thing happens here. I did a emerge and etc-update. I noticed that /etc/pam.d was to be updated but I did it automatically (-5).
edit your /etc/pam.d/login
This works here:
Code: | auth required /lib/security/pam_securetty.so
auth required /lib/security/pam_stack.so service=system-auth
auth required /lib/security/pam_nologin.so
account required /lib/security/pam_stack.so service=system-auth
password required /lib/security/pam_stack.so service=system-auth
session required /lib/security/pam_stack.so service=system-auth
session optional /lib/security/pam_console.so |

hmmm that was an improvement it now asks for both username and password before saying "login incorrect" (sorry not invalid user i have to run up and down stairs to get to my gentoo box).
Anything else? |

PROBLEM SOLVED
I ended up deleting /etc/pam.whatever/logon and remergeing shadow.
All is working again.
Thanks everyone. |
