Flatpanel recommendations?

Hi all, I'm in the process of moving from the US to Euorpe, and decided to ditch my old CRT monitor in favor of a new flat-panel (LCD). I've been looking at some reviews of various monitors, but I though some first hand info would be a lot more helpful.

So... Does anyone have a flatpanel they especially like? Any recommendations on what brand or model to get, or for that matter stay away from? I'm looking for a 17"er, somewhere in the $300-$500 range.

Have a look on the Samsung panels !

For me there are the bests. (I'm the happy owner of a Samsung SyncMaster 191n).

I would take a look at tigerdirect and see what is on special this week. They seem to have the best prices. I have five flat panels at home and have purchased over a hundred for work (mostly from td). I will say that sony, dell, dell, and viewsonic are all consistently good quality. You might also want to think about a referbished lcd (available there as well) with a good warranty. My experience is if they are going to go bad they do so immediatly or not at all.

And no I don't work for tigerdirect.

Make sure what you buy is 25ms or faster (lower number == faster)

If you think you might want to do dual display at some time a narrow bezel is a good idea.

I'd stick with a major manufacturer, Samsung is my prefered brand at this time.

I'd go DVI unless you're on a tight budget but if that were the case then you probably wouldn't be looking at an LCD :)

Samsung really does make the best monitors, as they are the only company that makes their own LCD's, most other companies just make the case/bezel. But Samsung also has some of the highest prices. I have an NEC LCD1810 that works great, but this is an older model, not made anymore.

But before you do buy an LCD make sure you really do want one. The LCD's do look a lot better on your desk, and sometimes can be easier on your eyes, but they have greater limitations in resolution choices. Like if you are going to be using that computer for games mostly, I would go with a CRT because they seem to be more able when it comes to changing the resolution many times during the startup of a game. It might just be my monitor, but if I minimise a game, and then try to go back to it, the video freaks out and i have to restart the game. But with my 20" CRT I have no problems.

And if you plan to run anything higher that 1280/1024 you have to get at least a 20" LCD, and those can get really expensive!! I have seem very few 19" models that do 1600/1200.

Just do your homework, cause you don't want to have any complaints about that new $500 LCD after you shell out the dough!

Hey, thanks for all the replies. Looks like it'll be a Samsung, I always like it when companies build an entire product and not just put it together, plus I just got a new CD/DVD combo from them which I really like.
As to if I really want a flat panel or not, well, my room is hardly big enough for a bed, plus as a CS major I do a lot of programming work, for which the low eye-strain of an LCD is really nice. With the ati vid card I have graphics get messed up anyways if I minimize games, so that's nothing new

It rocks. £350, with a DVI connector, 17", 1280x1024. The viewing angle is good, but not perfect. Amazon.co.uk I think are still doing it the cheapest (free delivery).
