Which would people suggest? Having had issues with amarok 2 compiling under ~x64 and the fact its bloating up like a fat bridesmaid i have decided to look at mpd _________________ I know 43 ways to kill with a SKITTLE, so taste my rainbow bitch. |

I suggest mpc for a console client (I mostly used this for basic testing when I getting mpd set up), but works fine as a basic client if needed. In a window managed environment, I really like Sonata as a graphical 'front end' (client) for mpd. The interface (and others have noted as well) is one of the best mixtures of 'only the stuff needed' and 'the right stuff under the right tab'. Even has neat things like cover art options, but not complicated at all to use. Sonata...A+ interface and a simple 'stays out of my way' design pattern.
For note, since you're 'looking' (not sure of how far you are yet) at mpd, you might be underwhelmed by the simplicity of the model at first, but like many *NIXy things, there's great flexiblity and 'power' with mpd once you get just below the surface. I used 'behemoth' (my term) programs like Amarok/Rhythmbox for playback before as well, but once I grokked the mpd/(client of choice) setup, I can never go back. I've had multiple mpd queues of hundreds of songs play/repeat for months on end on the same box with almost nil cpu load (with arbitrary multiple clients attached). I sometimes had troubles just setting up a single hundred entry playlist in 'behemoth' programs without it crashing (never even got to click 'play' !). Just understand, you don't really need to 'replace' Amarok with mpd/(client of choice) as such as with mpd, you have 'another way/option' of queueing your music library/vault for playback. Mpd is a client/server playback model, so it's good to kinda grasp that before wading in. Again, if you like, it's not that you can't still use Amarok to actually assist in managing your vault proper (although basic 'Grip' ripping/tagging and any decent file manager will work too for organizing a music vault). mpd comes into it when you want industrial-strength 'playback' options and capabilities.
For note, I went from 'emerge -av mpd mpc' to actually getting music out my speakers in about 20 minutes (but my music vault was much smaller at the time...probably only about 80M when I first let 'mpd --create-db' fly, which didn't take much time at all to index). |

i have mpd in - did that before i went to bed last night - was so simple to set up even i did it without issue Just after a client now as like i said amarok craps out on compile and i feel its getting bloated, like most apps whether windows or open source, seems its all about the eye candy
Thanks for the suggestions i'll have a look at them now
edit: think sonata might be out as i dont have gtk :p _________________ I know 43 ways to kill with a SKITTLE, so taste my rainbow bitch. |

Sonata is really good indeed. If you want one based on Qt4, check qmpdclient (or its fork qmpdclient-ne). _________________ "Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves." - Abraham Lincoln

configure: error: liblircclient0 not found - is the error i get when i try to compile ncmpc, although lirc is in, after some googling seems a .pc file isn't installed, i can get around it but removing the lirc dep from the ebuild _________________ I know 43 ways to kill with a SKITTLE, so taste my rainbow bitch. |

If you're using a version from portage, file a bug.
But I would recommend you look at ncmpcpp. _________________ "Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves." - Abraham Lincoln
