Yeah, the linux desktop has about doubled since last year.. a good thing.
Still infatesimal compared to Windows.. 0.35%->0.69%
But shit, if we increase like that every year, it'll be great. _________________ what up |

Wow, doubling every year, that would be cool if it continues.
t0 = 2003 = 0.69%
t1 = 3.9%
t2 = 7.8%
t3 = 16% (More than Apple!)
t4 = 31%
t5 = 62%
t6 = 100% (Total world domination! w00t!)
In 4 or 5 years, Linux might even be simple enough for your average AOL user. Nah, probably not... |

i don't know about ports (although the ports are slowly growing in numbers), but i know linux as itself is growing pretty strong lately.
i just passed the first job interview for making a linux distro for our government - untill 2005 they're going to switch all servers and workstations to linux _________________ tea+free software+law=hook

I just noticed a lot of activity lately with UT2004 being confirmed for Linux (this time the tux logo will be on the box) and the source to Homeworld being released and almost ported already, and Savage just had a simultaneous Win/Linux release, lots of new stuff coming out of garage games recently, the whole HL2 for Linux thing made it on the main Slashdot page, etc.
In the recent past, mainstream Linux game releases were few and far between, now it just seems like every week or so there is something new. The list of high quality games for Linux is getting bigger and bigger every week it seems. I just hope everyone is doing their part and buying the games.
I said it before and I'll say it again, once Linux starts to take hold in a particular area, you can't stop. I guess all the WineX boycotters were wrong cuz all I've been seeing lately is Linux ports and whole countries, states, and businesses adopting Linux as fast as possible.

Its one of my favorites too. I'm playing through HW2 right now. Its hard.
You can download the source here:
http://www.relic.com/rdn/
Its not GPL, its more like a mod license if you want to use the source. You will have to own HW to actually use the Linux binary once its released. The cutscenes won't work as well because the Bink player is not included. That Bink thing has been a thorn in our side for a long time. |

I was actually surprised about UT2004 shipping with a Linux installer and the Tux logo since people in the community actively boycotted UT2003 because it was missing the Tux logo. (big thanks to a company who ported a great game huh). Then it was boycotted again because the OpenGL renderer wasn't as fast as the DirectX renderer.
For a community of people who see about 0.01% of all games ported to their platform, we sure do boycott a lot of stuff. |

Wow man, you need to work on your maths.
0.69 * 2 = 1.38... not 3.9? _________________ Want Free games?

Yeah, but for every guy that boycotts there's about 30 linux users that buy the tittle.
We're starved for good games.
Savage was an awesome recent Linux release. It's a fun game. I'm glad to hear that UT2004 will run under Linux. I'm assuming ID's next Doom will run under Linux as well?
Anyone know of any other titles coming out that will run under Linux?
If enough good games start to come out under Linux I'll finally be able to blow away my Win XP partition. |

some questions:
are you playing HW2 in linux? also, could you give a link to the homeworld linux port?
thanks |

It should be doable since it's OpenGL, but it [Homeworld2] uses a lot of Windows specific code. To run it in Linux would be a LOT of work with a team of dedicated programmers, never mind me or you. _________________ Registered Linux User #263260 |

Why Linux users have some inferiority complex about games ?
It's easier to port a windoze game to Linux than to the PS2 or GC ! That's a good reason for companies to start making games for our favorite penguin instead of doing lame ports to game consoles. And btw, making a portable game makes it easier to port to consoles |

But portating a game to a consle bings more cash then portating to linux! |

The CD protection is annoying. The CD Protection gave my perfectly legal Windows ME computer GPF's. Stupid Sierra! So, I think we'd at least have to remove that to get a WineX homeworld2. Apparently, only Windows XP can run the Homeworld2 cd without bluescreens adn gpf's, and Winex (to my knowledge) doesn't do WindowsXP. _________________ Registered Linux User #263260 |

Yes, DooM3 will run natively on linux Not sure if it will be included in the box, but definately a free download, like always.
The multiplayer demo @ QuakeCon '03 ran under linux, now that's cool!
