Whats linux like as a desktop?
I'm sorry this could be offensive, but I'm from a Windows Background, and well I have winXP Pro as my desktop, never thought about using linux as desktop, can it still do what I do in windows?
I like OfficeXP.... Thats the most important part and hrm, PC games I guess..
But I really like my gentoo server tho, run beautifully for almost a 2 years now... and has no major problems.....
I must admit, linux do make great servers!! |
If you are into windows games, then Linux will not, obviously, suite you. However, as a desktop minus windows games*, it is much better or about the same as Windows, depending on you since it can be configured differently (unlike Windows). If you want to see the different graphical configurations, you can start by going to these threads:
Gentoo Desktops Part 2: Whats yours look like?
Gentoo desktops for October '03
Gentoo desktops for September '03
* do realize that some native windows games do work on Linux with Wine and that there are great (and usually free) games on Linux. |

One machine, that acts as my favourite desktop, and my internal Samba and NAT server. I'll be installing on another machine (probably) soon.
It's certainly made life easier and fun to have a system that doesn't come with about 10239013089 features that I don't want and will never use, and that forces me to learn something about everything that I do with it, so that I don't make silly mistakes. |

Gentoo on the desktop and servers.
Desktop use:
OpenOffice 1.1, XMMS, Mozilla, Mozilla mail because of it's awesome spamfilter, Pan, Grip, Eterm, XQF(Urban Terror and True Combat), Savage, NWN, Gnucash, TeamSpeak and gdesklets.
Server use:
Apache 2 w/ mod_php, exim or postfix, sshd, ntop, and proftpd. One of my servers runs TeamSpeak and will end up a media server once tv-out support works on my PVR350 WinTV card. |

Desktop only here, with ocassional FTP hosting to transfer files. I may host my website on it too If I find it doesn't lag thing too much(but probably not, I put high demands on my desktop use and every performance counts. |

Desktop running Gentoo, server running Gentoo (samba, openssh, apache2), building Gentoo on my laptop as I write this, firewall runs smoothwal, and my other 2 pc's run windows, but 1 will be being converted shortly. the other one runs it out of necessity for the moment, until i can get the apps on it to wine properly |

Athlon 2800xp in a Shuttle SN45G is my desktop, for playing enemy-territory and allround desktop purposes.
Athlon 1600xp is both server and desktop.
Runs as a gameserver, and can be booted into desktop mode also ( in case someone drops by without his gaming pc ). Desktop mode is also used for testing purposes.
VIA Epia Nehemiah 1 Ghz, only runs as server.
Web-, FTP-, database-, backup server.
Currently also runs an Enemy-Territory server with shrubmod for testing. |

im running gentoo as my desktop with intermitted use of windows xp, i like win syntax for coding and office xp for work...but everything personal related, eg browsing, or watching tv, or chaatting - gentoo is my choice.
i also run gentoo on my server which acts as a router, file-server samba3, webserver apache2, portage server (internal only) to save me from emerge syncing multiable times, dhcp and a whole host of other things |

I'm running a mixed network at home..
I'm running 2 gentoo servers (One on a Dell PowerEdge 4200) which host a variety of things.
Kisargi (the Dell PowerEdge) runs Apache, MySQL, Mod_php, php4, ssl, sasl, postfix (it's a virtual mailhost system and webserver). It probably will eventually get samba loaded as well as VPN services for my biz.
The other box is named highwind, and will be hosting a FTP server and IRC Server for the FleetChat IRC Network. it's an old PII 266, so I can use it for whatever I need it to
I have Gentoo on my laptop, which I use predominantly for most of my stuff, except for webdevelopment (I use Dreamweaver) and gaming. Most of my games won't run in Wine properly (either due to my incompetence or whatever), so I have a WInXP Desktop. Pretty soon, I'm gonna get a Intel Celeron 900Mhz for a Gentoo desktop.. now where's my kvm switch.. *looks around* _________________ "no fate but what we make..."

I use it for both.
I have Gentoo on my home machine (which dual boots with Win2k for some unknown reason since I haven't even touched the Win2k drive in months, since I got rid of the scanner) and at work. Both of those are desktops.
I also have Gentoo on my home server, which acts as my router/firewall as well as having SSH, ftp, and personal apache.
I used to use Gentoo on my business server, which did full fledged Web/DNS/Mail hosting, but closed it down due to being too expensive to run (that machine is now my home server as mentioned above).
So far, I'd say Gentoo is the perfect OS for my usage, and can't think of a single place I wouldn't want to use it. _________________ Remove OTW |

As others have said the games will be a problem. But, while I highly encourage the use of a non MS office suit if you can, OfficeXP should run fine under crossover. I know Office2k does.
I'm from a windows background too but I rarely use windows anymore.
Oh, and I use gentoo on a desktop and a server. My brothter also uses a gentoo box that I built for him as a desktop. He has been using that one for several months now. And he's not a "linux geek" at all. Not yet anyway. |

I've never used linux as a server, only on the desktop/workstation (3 years now). But just now, I've finished installing gentoo on a server, so this is a first for me! _________________ --- checking for native Win32 platform... no |
