|
|
Is there a way to install only part of a package? Taking kdenetwork as an example; it installs kppp by default. I don't use kppp and don't want it on my system.
According to /usr/portage/profiles/use.desc, there is no USE variable for PPP, so I can't use that.
Is there any way, short of manually editing the kdenetwork ebuild script, to build a package minus one or two of the components?
Thanks.

Not to my knowledge. All or nothing, barring USE variables. |

I'd like that very much, too. Actually, one of the things I like most about Gentoo is exactly the ability to install only what you want, and nothing else. So, being able to install e.g. kmail without getting kppp too would just be in accordance with this philosophy. _________________ | www.gentoo.org | www.tldp.org | www.google.com

OK, guess I'll file a bug report as a feature suggestion.

hmm... the only way i can think of to install an individual piece of a kde package is to unpack it and muck around inside to look for the particular makefile that builds the app you want
it really isnt a gentoo problem... more of a kde thing
maybe you could use ebuild to fetch, unpack, compile, and install the packe (dont qmerge it) and then manually copy files over from the /var/tmp directory.. but again.. thats really messy |

Please dont do that..
One of the thigns I so disliked about Debian was that it broke up KDE like this, and typically broke things. |

kppp is not a dependency of kmail. They come (with others) bundled inside kdenetwork. _________________ | www.gentoo.org | www.tldp.org | www.google.com

You must have had a unique experience with Debian, then, because I've never, ever heard anyone else complain about this. _________________ The problem with political jokes is that they get elected |
