try and push the tab button. if it is filled with an additional 0 than your driver works.
if not than post please |

cat /dev/video
i press tab, i get
cat /dev/video0
so then my driver works. can you recommend some software with which to test the the camera, or help me troubleshoot why skype wont pick it up? |

Try installing media-libs/libv4l, then try again. |

I have an older Logitech QuickCam Pro 4000 which uses the pwc driver, which in turn relies on v4l 1. Flash 9 only supported v4l 1 devices and not v4l 2 devices. Now Flash 10 supports only v4l 2 devices and not v4l 1 devices. Perhaps neither are able to or are not designed to be able to access the compatability library if that indeed applies (rather than being a matter for the v4l layer to handle).
That is, of course, if you even have a v4l 1 cam. |

if i search for "quickcam" in menuconfig, i find this:
Code: |
Symbol: USB_QUICKCAM_MESSENGER [=n] x
x Prompt: USB Logitech Quickcam Messenger x
x Defined at drivers/media/video/usbvideo/Kconfig:40 x
x Depends on: HAS_IOMEM && VIDEO_CAPTURE_DRIVERS && VIDEO_V4L2 && x
x Location: x
x -> Device Drivers x
x -> Multimedia devices x
x -> Video capture adapters (VIDEO_CAPTURE_DRIVERS [=y]) x
x -> V4L USB devices (V4L_USB_DRIVERS [=y]) x
x Selects: VIDEO_USBVIDEO |
i cannot locate this usb_quickcam option for the life of me.
where is this logitech driver in the kernel? so i can enable it? |

The in-kernel Quickcam and Quickcam Express driver is called "stv06xx". And needs libv4l installed. For full features use 2.6.31. |

ok i found it and enabled is as module.
how do i know its enabled and how can i test it? i still get this after kernel modification:
Code: |
bobby@tux ~ $ xawtv

Install,
Code: | emerge media-libs/libv4l |
Check that kernel module is loaded,
Code: |
dmesg
lsmod (If it's a module.)
|
Try to load xawtv,
Code: |
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so xawtv
|
OR
Code: |
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l2convert.so xawtv
|
But xawtv is ooold, try camorama, guvcview or cheese for example.
And possible a reboot if you didn't, to let "udev" to start from fresh. |
