Please do not jump down my throat because I am posting on the Gentoo forums Ubuntu and tell me that this isn't the Ubuntu forums. If you've done all you can with no luck, I will go to the Ubuntu Community for help. I would rather deal with all of my internet connection sharing related help in one forum, though.
I just bought a crossover cable so I can get internet (wireless) from my laptop onto my desktop. Both have Ubuntu on them, and working internet. When I try to connect to eth0 it says it disconnected right after trying to connect. I believe I have everything configured correctly on the host computer (laptop), but apparently not since it's not working.
The reason I am posting to the Gentoo forums is because I have installed Gentoo on my desktop, and I am using crossover cables to get internet working on it so I can finish configuring it to my taste. If I can't connect using Ubuntu, how in the world can I connect with Gentoo. |

Your laptop either needs to NAT your desktop (and you'll need a static IP and routing, or run a DHCP server on your laptop).
Alternatively, you can bridge the two interfaces together on your laptop, which may not work for a number of reasons (you haven't described how the wireless internet works), including (but not limited to):
- many wireless adaptors explode if you try and use bridging with them, the firmware doesn't like it
- if you're only allowed a single IP via your wireless internet, then your desktop will remain without an IP (and obviously things won't work)
So, you probably want NAT. It goes something like this: http://www.revsys.com/writings/quicktips/nat.html _________________ Game! - Where the stick is mightier than the sword! |
