Gahhh, it seems like I just installed test7, lol. Well, I can't complain if development is going "too fast" |

I think linus only wants bugfixes at this stage so there's not as much activity. Hes probably gonna try for a release before christmas (tho from what I read they've never managed a christmas release for a new stable kernel, or at least not with 2.2x of 2.4x)

Test8 runs great here. Nvidia, Vmware, USB-Burner, everything is working.

Vmware runs on kernel-2.6.test* ?
Some time ago i couldn't get running Vmware on 2.5.x
I thought i have to wait for 2.6 stable release & vmware build supporting it. |

I notice I have to explicitly/manually modprobe for modules that were previously automagically modprobed (nvidia; rtc; pppoe).
Is this due to 2.6.0-test8.
In test7, all was modprobed without explicit modprobes |

Where are the ebuilds?
Can't find an ebuild after an emerge sync yet.
Does anyone have a resource link ?

Has anyone had any trouble switching from 2.4 to 2.6 ?
What are the implications of a system being built on 2.4 moving to 2.6 ? |

there is a problem compiling IPV6 into the kernel, Had to move the IPV6 folder from the old test7 kernel to the test8 kernel to get it to compile. |

i have big problems with test8. alsa seems to crash my system. I found an other guy on the lkml having the same problem: http://www.ussg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0310.2/0518.html
whenever alsa hangs, I can't to ps, top, lsof or anything system related anymore. can't even logout of gnome. only magic sysrq get's my system to at least reboot cleanly. |

I'm having the problem with Alsa too.
It has todo when ESOUND (ESD) is running, so for now I've just disabled ESD.
It's really annoying though.. |

good point.
but then I have something really strange going on. I just checked, and indeed esd is running:
Code: | ps -fax | grep esd
3871 ? S 0:00 /usr/bin/esd -terminate -nobeeps -as 2 -spawnfd 34 |
BUT: I haven't enabled esd in gnome. so where is esd coming from? |

They're coming. They're already in cvs, you just have to wait for them to trickle down to your rsync mirror.
or just grab it from cvs if you're impatient.

Maybe you've upgraded baselayout also in the meantime, which
means that it now uses the /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6 file instead the 2.5 oder 2.4 file. Just copy your kernel-2.4 over to kernel-2.6 _________________ This is my sick nature |

http://home.earthlink.net/~skypanther/intel8x0.patch
Put this file into /usr/src/linux/sound/pci
then run patch -p0 < intel8x0.patch
and then go into the linux src root folder, make clean, and recompile the kernel..
The patch seems to have fixed my problem.. tell me if it fix's yours.. |

Works great, no sound problems to speak of, even works with APIC and nvidia. _________________ "Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we, they never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we." George W. Bush |

Um.. I downloaded the Alsa driver, looked inside, found the patch file, patched the kernel file, and then tried to crash Alsa, it did not, so I assume it fixed the problem.. heh
Did it work for you as well?.. |

Out of curiousity, why the suddenly more conservative KEYWORDS flags in the test7 and test8 ebuilds? |

I crashed when I turned APIC on, on my NForce2 MB, However it took longer then usual. It crashed after I opened up FireBird, while I was compiling an app in the terminal.
Still needs some work. |
