Holy hell. I guess that explains why it seems to get slower and clunkier every time I'm forced to open it for something antiword or abiword can't deal with properly.
I just can't stand using it, it takes forever to start and something bugs me about the UI design in general. I'd rather use Word, frankly _________________ Buying? Is that some new disruptive technology to replace P2P or something? -pjp

I summed all the little packages I have installed and it takes about 300 MB in Ubuntu. |

The ebuild must be doing something really stupid as the download directly from openoffice.org is only 154MB.
See: http://omploader.org/vMmJjOA
I just had a look at the ebuild. I would guess that portage is adding up the sizes of all possible linguas and not just the base package. That would probably account for the obscene size. |

On my end, openoffice-bin-3.1.1 comes to 155.7 MB and 3.0.0 comes to 148.6 MB
Probably like the other person mentioned (including sizes for all LINGUAS). Probably if you have none set it installs support for them all or something similar. _________________ My political stance/bias

Actually, I think that when you use options like "--fetchonly" (or whatever it is called), it ignores your linguas settings and downloads them all anyway... at least it used to do that when I was still using Gentoo. |

Plus, the info displayed in the OP was obviously not from using "--fetchonly" as using that option doesn't display file sizes. _________________ My political stance/bias

Doing a simple Code: | emerge -av openoffice-bin | puts the size at about 158MB.
So I don't know where the --search is getting 3GB from. |

Moved from Off the Wall to Gentoo Chat. |

It's something with the LINGUAS. Wasn't the same thing talked about in relation to acroread a while back? _________________

It's a bogus number; I see it too with "emerge -s". But with "emerge -f", you get a more reasonable answer: Code: | IPSN-JOHNGRAH2 ~ # emerge -vf openoffice-bin
These are the packages that would be fetched, in order:
Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild N ] app-office/openoffice-bin-3.0.0 USE="-gnome java kde" LINGUAS="-af -ar -as_IN -be_BY -bg -br -bs -ca -cs -da -de -dz -el en en_GB -en_ZA -es -et -fi -fr -ga -gu -he -hi_IN -hr -hu -it -ja -ka -km -ko -lt -mk -ml_IN -mr_IN -nb -ne -nl -nn -nr -ns -or_IN -pa_IN -pl -pt -pt_BR -ru -rw -sh -sk -sl -sr -ss -st -sv -sw_TZ -ta -te_IN -tg -th -ti_ER -tr -ts -uk -ur_IN -ve -vi -xh -zh_CN -zh_TW -zu" 165,517 kB
[blocks B ] app-office/openoffice ("app-office/openoffice" is blocking app-office/openoffice-bin-3.0.0)
[blocks B ] app-office/openoffice-bin ("app-office/openoffice-bin" is blocking app-office/openoffice-3.0.0)
Total: 1 package (1 new), Size of downloads: 165,517 kB
Conflict: 2 blocks (2 unsatisfied)
| Each language pack is 2 - 3 MiB so, if you somehow got them all, the might be another 200MiB or so.

Actually, I've noticed that it's gotten much quicker recently. It now starts in about 2 seconds, down from 40 lol. _________________ undvd - ripping dvds should be as simple as unzip |
