PostPosted: Thu Sep 24, 2009 1:47 pm    Post subject: compiz-manager no window borders [SOLVED] Reply with quote

I am having trouble loading compiz. What I am reading sounds like compiz should be started through compiz-manager in a terminal, however I can load up the CompizConfig Settings Manager in Gnome and check preferences, they have no effect.

I have unmasked compiz -0.8.2-r3 and compiz-fusion-0.8.2 to be able to install them, and all the dependencies which I have also unmasked/emerged. I will post any other outputs/package.keywords if necessary as I have seen others do. I'm unsure which ones are needed at this point.

Here is the output of compiz-manager in terminal:
Code:
Checking for Xgl: not present.
Detected PCI ID for VGA: 01:00.0 0300: 10de:0640 (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Checking for texture_from_pixmap: not present.
Trying again with indirect rendering:
Checking for texture_from_pixmap: present.
Checking for non power of two support: present.
Checking for Composite extension: present.
Comparing resolution (1280x1024) to maximum 3D texture size (2048): Passed.
Checking for nVidia: present.
Checking for FBConfig: present.
Checking for Xgl: not present.
Starting emerald
/usr/bin/compiz (core) - Fatal: Root visual is not a GL visual
/usr/bin/compiz (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 0
/usr/bin/compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0

Thank you.

Can you give me the output of:

cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf

I'm suspecting you are using a non-3D capable driver.

[quote="ISHAIM"]Here is my xorg.conf:

Try removing the above lines, they might interfere. You are using a driver capable of doing this, still it does not work. If removing the above lines does not work, then please post /var/log/Xorg.0.log :)

There is a problem. Please post the output of:

eselect opengl list

This is under the assumption you installed the nvidia driver through gentoo!

The output probably says xorg-x11 but should be the one from nvidia...

I see. Here is the output of eselect opengl list:

Code:
Available OpenGL implementations:

  [2]   xorg-x11 *

I ran eselect opengl set 1.

That seems to allow compiz effects to work. There is one problem left that I have. None of the windows have a titlebar or border around them. From the Compiz Fusion Icon, I have to choose Metacity as my Window Manager, from which the compiz effects stop working. Here is the output of compiz-manager now:

Thank you very much for your help.

Nice, looking at the output you posted, this could be the problem:

inotify_add_watch: No such file or directory

Do you have inotify in your kernel?

cat /usr/src/`uname -r`/.config | grep INOTIFY

Also, you could try another theme and see if that helps. Because it seems compiz is not happy with the current one XD

Actually the problem was that I didn't have some options in the CompizConfiguration Setup Manager set. I fixed them and am using Compiz just fine, but I'm still worried about what you're saying about inotify. I will check later, but if I don't have it in my kernel, what section of the kernel configuration can I find it?

Actually the problem was that I didn't have some options in the CompizConfiguration Setup Manager set. I fixed them and am using Compiz just fine, but I'm still worried about what you're saying about inotify. I will check later, but if I don't have it in my kernel, what section of the kernel
configuration can I find it?

You don't have inotify? What device does your OS run on? Embedded? :P

File Systems -> Inotify support for userspace

That is the only one I have activated.

Actually, I do have inotify in my kernel. Should I be concerned about those error messages in that case?

Well, ofcourse I'm no compiz expert. But, whenever a program misbehaves, you should read these (sometimes error) messages to figure out what could be going wrong. These messages are an indication something isn't as it should be causing undesired behaviour. The cause that you have no borders could be found by following those messages. Did you try another theme btw?
