Actually this seems to be much bigger than just Thunar. I get this error-message as a user, but as root it starts without problems.

The file is there and the permissions look ok, as far as I can tell(?).

I don't hava such a problem... but while looking for info for a different XFCE issue I've seen these topics (thanks to Mike Hunt :) ) that may have something to do with PNG images.

I had Thunar not starting for me because I was not in the plugdev group but I got a dbus error that set me on the right track even if it was not obvious.
