|
|
Hello. I seem to have broken xfce4 after installing Compiz-fusion and
can't fix it. I had xfce4 working perfectly. I following the
Compiz-fusion HOW-TO on the wiki and it didn't work, so I unmerged it
and then xfce was borked. There aren't any window buttons any more. I
can't move any of the windows. Windows are fixxed to left half of screen. Windows don't minimize, maximize or fullscreen. All
my workspaces have disapeared, even if I change the number of spaces
there's only one. The keyboard doesn't always respond. The mouse cursor
disapears or it appears like the cross on the desktop like when X
starts to load normally, but changes to an arrow when I mouse over a
window. The window manager settings won't start. It looks buggy rather
than misconfigured. I have unmerged xfce4 and remerged it. I have
removed the package.keyword file that I created to install Compiz-fusion and updated new use flags, and even emtied my portage tree, but to no avail. I can live without Compiz, I was just checking it out, but I would really like to get xfce back to normal without re-intalling if possible. I appreciate any insights. I think it has to do with the window manager component of xfce.
I'm using an ATI Radeon 9600 grafix card with the radeon driver and
OpenGL. Kernel is 2.6.30-r6. xorg-server 1.6.3.901-r2. xorg-x11 7.4-r1.

I've had some problems with Xfce4 recently and it was down to problems with dbus.
Check to see if you've got xfdesktop running, if not start it from the terminal and see if it will actually get up and running. If its dying with dbus errors then try the solution suggested here which worked for me. _________________ "Science is what we understand well enough to explain to a computer. Let's see...
# rc-update add dbus defaults
And if you have hald installed..
# rc-update add hald defaults
- Make sure you are in "plugdev" group.
If you have icons problems..
$ update-mime-database ~/.local/share/mime/
(as your user, not root!)
And you can move ~/.cache and ~/.config directories out of the way (backup!) to start from fresh. |

Thank you both so much for your replies. It wasn't dbus or the mime-info. Removing ~/.cache and ~/.config fixed it. So simplejavascript:emoticon('')
This is a great forum, and Gentoo is amazing, even though I spend more time fixing stuff than acually doing anything, I've learned so much about LInux.

no worries this "fixing stuff [more] than actually doing anything" is only at the beginning
you'll later learn if everything you need for being productive is emerged it better NOT to emerge and/or update daily but rather weekly or even monthly _________________ https://github.com/kernelOfTruth/ZFS-for-SystemRescueCD/tree/ZFS-for-SysRescCD-4.9.0
