PostPosted: Fri Oct 16, 2009 9:35 pm    Post subject: X Shortcut keys [Solved] Reply with quote

I recently upgraded to 2.6.30 and with it came a newer version of X and just about everything else.

Since the upgrade my X shortcut keys (ctrl-alt-bksp & ctrl-alt-fn) haven't worked. I have disabled the DontZap and DontVTSwitch xorg.conf ServerFlags, and tried xkbmap (and ctrl-SysReq-K or whatever the shortcut is). However:

Ctrl-Alt-Bpsk & Ctrl-SysReq-K
Results in X half shutting down. The screen goes black, but then it just hangs there. The only thing that I have found to work is to use Ctrl-Alt-Del to shutdown the laptop.

Ctrl-Alt-Fn
Everything remains exactly the same, but the cursor disappears and the keyboard is unresponsive. The only way to bring control back is to hit Ctrl-Alt-F7.

I think the xorg.0.log file just ends with nothing out of the ordinary.

Any suggestions of where to look?

add this to your input keyboard section of your Xorg.conf:
Code:
Option "XkbOptions" "terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp"

Another way is to add the following line to ~/.xinitrc
Code:
setxkbmap -option terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp

Thanks for the post, but that hasn't helped unfortunately. The setxkbmap command (which is what I meant above) does enable the ctrl-alt-bksp shortcut, but terminating X only seems to crash it.

The OS is actually working fine (logging in via SSH still works ok, ctrl-alt-del works ok) - it's just X doesn't exit cleanly and hangs on a black screen instead. Trying to kill X from the command line has the same effect, as does clicking xfce's "Log Out".

dmesg & Xorg.0.log don't appear to show anything useful.

How can I debug this problem?

does typing "killall X" kill it cleanly or does it do the same as ctrl-alt-bkspc?

Hello

If you follow update guide of Xorg you use HAL about keyboard and mouse.

Add option line under fdi file of your keyboard

<merge key="input.xkb.options" type="string">terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp</merge>

restart hal and X

Well, from the Xorg.0.log file, you have a version mismatch in the mouse module,
not sure if that will feed back and cause keyboard problems though

With the latest systems, they use hal/dbus/consolekit/evdev

Are you running hal and dbus and are they started/loaded?
Code:

$ rc-status |grep -E "hal|dbus"
 dbus                                                                                   [ started  ]
 hald                                                                                   [ started  ]

Have you emerged xf86-input-evdev?

Code:

$ equery -i list evdev
!!! unknown global option -i, reusing as local option
[ Searching for package 'evdev' in all categories among: ]
 * installed packages
[I--] [  ] x11-drivers/xf86-input-evdev-2.2.5 (0)

If you are insistent on using the old way of X then
Code:
emerge xf86-input-mouse

that may shut it up.

Also how are you running X, startx or xdm?

I'm running with startx.

dbus & hal were installed, but not running. I've added them now to the default runlevel. xf86-input-evdev is already installed at 2.2.5.

However, I misread your post and stupidly remerged xf86-input-mouse after adding dbus & hal to startup. Now when I boot up each keyboard stroke is repeated 3 times!

I'll have a muck about and see what I can figure out. I'm thinking I should maybe remove xf86-input-mouse (and possibly xf86-input-keyboard) an re-run the xorg configure script....

ok, with dbus & hal running, I have changed the xorg keyboard driver to evdev, and it's all good. Except dbus & hal add a couple of seconds to my boot up time, which is a bit rubbish.

However, even with the evdev drivers, X still wont shut down. Clicking "Log out" on the Xfce "Action Buttons" applet has the same effect, so I'm starting to realise that its not related to the shortcut command.

Shutting down (/sbin/shutdown) works ok though, but I suppose the kernel forces a close?...

Ok - think I've got it sussed.

It appears to be a bug (possibly?) with the xf86-video-intel drivers, and enabling CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE_DETECT_PRIMARY in the kernel config resolves it. Not sure what affect this will have on the rest of my system though...

See here http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Intel_GMA#VT_switching_with_Framebuffer.

It has resolved both the shutdown of x problem and the VT switching problem.

(And I've got to say, it's a bit odd getting used to evdev configuration when you're used to xorg.conf for mouse & keyboard!)
