There has not been done any backporting to 2.6.27 afaik.
You should wait for a new release i guess. |

Thanks. I've switched to XFS; I also think it's too early for ext4 with OpenVZ. Let's wait. _________________ Gentoo addict: tomorrow I quit, I promise!... Just one more emerge...

Cheater...
Yes, they do...now. I will have to go through my old .configs to resurrect the older zen source seeds I've made. I'll put that on the agenda for the next few weeks.
Blessed be!

Yes. Start with the .24 kernel, and move up until you find out where things die.

You got a seed recomendation for .24 on that box? Will makeoldconfig work in reverse, or do I have to do it all over again from scratch? _________________ The MyWord KJV Bible tool is at http://www.elilabs.com/~myword

Yes, make oldconfig does work in reverse. I usually don't recommend that, but considering how compact I make a seed, your errors, if any at all, should be very minimal. As for a recommended version, use the version of the CD since it is verifiable as functional with your setup.
You will definitely want to follow that up with a make xconfig (or menuconfig or gconfig), to be sure that you didn't get serious section migration.
If you do have issues, just let me know. I have all your info, and can whip you up a seed in whichever version you like.

Enjoy. I'm seeing if the new beta nvidia driver will allow core-too to work with xorg-server-1.7.1. It's just about test time. Voila! Core-too runs with the new beta nvidia driver. Woohoo!
Cool!
Blessed be!

OK, Pappy, I'm trying to do it, but I guess I've never had to emerge an *OLD* package before: Code: | ezekiel src # emerge -pv =sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.24-r7
These are the packages that would be merged, in order:
Calculating dependencies... done!
emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "=sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.24-r7".

Pappy:
Back to a subject we have been ignoring for a couple of months...
My HP nw8240 laptop.
When we last check with this box, it was booting 2.6.29-gentoo-r5 compiled on August 7 2009. OK, so it was 3 months...
Anyway, as you will recall, it had a firmware "issue" with the wireless ethernet, as shown by this dmesg excerpt: Code: | ipw2200: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200/2915 Network Driver, 1.2.2k
ipw2200: Copyright(c) 2003-2006 Intel Corporation
ipw2200 0000:02:04.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 21 (level, low) -> IRQ 21
ipw2200: Detected Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG Network Connection
eth1 (ipw2200): not using net_device_ops yet
ipw2200 0000:02:04.0: firmware: requesting ipw2200-bss.fw
ipw2200: ipw2200-bss.fw request_firmware failed: Reason -2
ipw2200: Unable to load firmware: -2
ipw2200: failed to register network device
ipw2200 0000:02:04.0: PCI INT A disabled
ipw2200: probe of 0000:02:04.0 failed with error -5
|
I suspended work on this because of other more pressing things, but now I'm back working on it.
Any idea how to satisfy this firmware request _________________ The MyWord KJV Bible tool is at http://www.elilabs.com/~myword

OK, its nice to know where they are kept, but my question was: Quote: | What's the trick to fetch an old ebuild? | So let me translate that into something a bit more specific: Quote: | What's the command to emerge an old ebuild? | Knowing where it is kept is nice, but it doesn't really help me emerge it. _________________ The MyWord KJV Bible tool is at http://www.elilabs.com/~myword

Code: | bash
OVERLAY_NAME='attic'
OVERLAY=`</etc/layman/layman.cfg sed -n '/^storage/s/.*:[ \t]*\(.*\)\/layman/\1/p'`/${OVERLAY_NAME}/ # Or pick a different one.
mkdir -p ${OVERLAY}{sys-kernel/gentoo-sources,profiles}
echo ${OVERLAY_NAME} > ${OVERLAY}/profiles/repo_name
echo 'PORTDIR_OVERLAY="'${OVERLAY}' ${PORTDIR_OVERLAY}"' >> /etc/make.conf
cd ${OVERLAY}sys-kernel/gentoo-sources
wget http://sources.gentoo.org/viewcvs.py/*checkout*/gentoo-x86/sys-kernel/gentoo-sources/gentoo-sources-2.6.24-r7.ebuild
ebuild gentoo-sources-2.6.24-r7.ebuild manifest
su -
emerge -av =sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.24-r7 |
Word wrapping may break some of the commands, do not let it.
Edit: Upon checking the paths given in layman.cfg, fixed the sed expression to put the overlay beside the layman managed overlay directory, not under it.

According to portage, you want to emerge -av net-wireless/ipw2200-firmware. I'm fairly sure that package automatically puts the firmware where it is supposed to reside (/lib/firmware/). I've never used it, though.
Blessed be!

I tried your command sequence, but: Code: | ezekiel ~ # OVERLAY_NAME='attic'
ezekiel ~ # OVERLAY=`</etc/layman/layman.cfg sed -n '/^storage/s/.*:[ \t]*\(.*\)\/layman/\1/p'`/${OVERLAY_NAME}/
-bash: /etc/layman/layman.cfg: No such file or directory

Looks to me like there's something fishy about the < after the ` and before the /etc/layman/layman.cfg. Did you mistype something here, or am I misunderstanding something?
In fact, there is no /etc/layman/ directory on this box. _________________ The MyWord KJV Bible tool is at http://www.elilabs.com/~myword

Moriah wrote: | Am I missing something, some prerequisite? | You apparently do not have app-portage/layman installed, nothing to worry about as it was just used for consistency if it had been installed.
Moriah wrote: | What do I need to do first? | Either install app-portage/layman or substitute OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage/${OVERLAY_NAME}/" for the line that failed then mkdir /usr/local/portage. Since you will need to assume superuser privileges to do so, you may as well su - to start with. If desired, you can change the permissions to something more amenable to user overlay management, such permissions were implicitly expected in my previous post.
Moriah wrote: | Looks to me like there's something fishy about the < after the ` and before the /etc/layman/layman.cfg. With the specified file present, and with appropriate contents, all that does is create a suitable directory name which should fit along with any other overlays you would have on the system. |

The firmware should have wound up in /lib/firmware/. When I run the ebuild myself, it says it installs the following files:
Code: | >>> /lib/firmware/LICENSE.ipw2200-fw
>>> /lib/firmware/ipw2200-sniffer.fw
>>> /lib/firmware/ipw2200-ibss.fw
>>> /lib/firmware/ipw2200-bss.fw
|
If those files don't exist, then you'll have to emerge the firmware again.
Blessed be!

They're there: Code: | isaac ~ # ls -l /lib/firmware/*2200*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 12007 Jul 22 08:51 /lib/firmware/LICENSE.ipw2200-fw
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 191142 Jul 22 08:51 /lib/firmware/ipw2200-bss.fw
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 185660 Jul 22 08:51 /lib/firmware/ipw2200-ibss.fw
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 187836 Jul 22 08:51 /lib/firmware/ipw2200-sniffer.fw
isaac ~ # | But dmesg still bellyaches about needing the firmware. Do I need to do something else? _________________ The MyWord KJV Bible tool is at http://www.elilabs.com/~myword

Moriah,
Is firmware loading support on in your kernel?
Check the filename that dmesg is looking for against those in /lib/firmware.
Some firmwares have been updated (and filenames changed) but the kernel module still looks for the old firmware.
Fix this either with a symlink or by renaming the firmware file. _________________ Regards,

Yes, the file that is being requested is in /lib/firmware. _________________ The MyWord KJV Bible tool is at http://www.elilabs.com/~myword

Don't remember the exact place but you can always type / in menuconfig and you'll be prompted with a dialog box for typing any text to search for. Look for "firmware" and you'll get menuconfig sections where the term can be found. _________________ Gentoo addict: tomorrow I quit, I promise!... Just one more emerge...

Be sure the driver is in module form. Wireless devices compiled into the kernel tend not to work.

I could not tell if firmware downloading was enabled or not. Here is the grep: Code: | isaac linux # grep -i firmware /boot/config-genkernel-x86-2.6.29-gentoo-r5
CONFIG_PREVENT_FIRMWARE_BUILD=y
CONFIG_FIRMWARE_IN_KERNEL=y
CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE=""
# CONFIG_FIRMWARE_EDID is not set
# Firmware Drivers
CONFIG_FIRMWARE_MEMMAP=y

Moriah,
I was being lazy, sorry. the kernel symbol is
Turn off Code: | CONFIG_FIRMWARE_IN_KERNEL=y | that sucks your firmware into the kernel, which is almost certainly a bad thing. There is an option somewhere to tell the kernel where to find the firmware and you maybe didn't set that.
That means your kernel would contain no firmware and firmware loading would be attempted from this empty space in the kernel. _________________ Regards,
