There has not been done any backporting to 2.6.27 afaik.

You got a seed recomendation for .24 on that box? Will makeoldconfig work in reverse, or do I have to do it all over again from scratch?

Yes, make oldconfig does work in reverse. I usually don't recommend that, but considering how compact I make a seed, your errors, if any at all, should be very minimal. As for a recommended version, use the version of the CD since it is verifiable as functional with your setup.
You will definitely want to follow that up with a make xconfig (or menuconfig or gconfig), to be sure that you didn't get serious section migration.
If you do have issues, just let me know. I have all your info, and can whip you up a seed in whichever version you like.

Enjoy. I'm seeing if the new beta nvidia driver will allow core-too to work with xorg-server-1.7.1. It's just about test time. Voila! Core-too runs with the new beta nvidia driver. Woohoo!

Back to a subject we have been ignoring for a couple of months...
My HP nw8240 laptop. 
When we last check with this box, it was booting 2.6.29-gentoo-r5 compiled on August 7 2009. OK, so it was 3 months...

According to portage, you want to emerge -av net-wireless/ipw2200-firmware. I'm fairly sure that package automatically puts the firmware where it is supposed to reside (/lib/firmware/). I've never used it, though.

Am I missing something, some prerequisite? What do I need to do first?
Looks to me like there's something fishy about the < after the ` and before the /etc/layman/layman.cfg. Did you mistype something here, or am I misunderstanding something?
In fact, there is no /etc/layman/ directory on this box.

You apparently do not have app-portage/layman installed, nothing to worry about as it was just used for consistency if it had been installed.

Either install app-portage/layman or substitute OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage/${OVERLAY_NAME}/" for the line that failed then mkdir /usr/local/portage. Since you will need to assume superuser privileges to do so, you may as well su - to start with. If desired, you can change the permissions to something more amenable to user overlay management, such permissions were implicitly expected in my previous post.

It is redirecting the input for sed so that it reads from a file, the form of quotation used invokes the quoted command and captures the output. With the specified file present, and with appropriate contents, all that does is create a suitable directory name which should fit along with any other overlays you would have on the system. |

The firmware should have wound up in /lib/firmware/. When I run the ebuild myself, it says it installs the following files:

Is firmware loading support on in your kernel?
Check the filename that dmesg is looking for against those in /lib/firmware.
Some firmwares have been updated (and filenames changed) but the kernel module still looks for the old firmware.
Fix this either with a symlink or by renaming the firmware file.

How do I check that? I've never needed firmware to be loaded in any system before, but this is my first laptop and my first wifi box under gentoo.
Yes, the file that is being requested is in /lib/firmware.

Don't remember the exact place but you can always type / in menuconfig and you'll be prompted with a dialog box for typing any text to search for. Look for "firmware" and you'll get menuconfig sections where the term can be found.

Be sure the driver is in module form. Wireless devices compiled into the kernel tend not to work.

I was being lazy, sorry. the kernel symbol is
Turn off | Code: | | CONFIG_FIRMWARE_IN_KERNEL=y |
that sucks your firmware into the kernel, which is almost certainly a bad thing. There is an option somewhere to tell the kernel where to find the firmware and you maybe didn't set that.
That means your kernel would contain no firmware and firmware loading would be attempted from this empty space in the kernel.
