if you get a chance to eselect read news you will get some clues as to why you are going through *%$# now
speaking of java:
If you are using sun and the license issue comes up ~masked by package license~
echo 'ACCEPT_LICENSE="*" ' >> /etc/make.conf
will clear it and any other license mask
substitute the license name for the * above if you want to protect against accepting a license that you haven't read
or put license(s) or * in /etc/portage/package.license |

thanks for the heads up, i will look into eselect news. I wish I was having problems with java at this point..it seems that after i fix one issue another one pops up. Now im getting this:
livecd / # emerge -e world
* IMPORTANT: 8 news items need reading for repository 'gentoo'.
* Use eselect news to read news items.
Calculating dependencies... done!
emerge: there are no ebuilds built with USE flags to satisfy ">=x11-libs/qt-sql-4.5.0:4[mysql]".
!!! One of the following packages is required to complete your request:
- x11-libs/qt-sql-4.5.3 (Change USE: +mysql)
(dependency required by "app-office/akonadi-server-1.2.1" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "kde-base/kdepimlibs-4.3.1" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "kde-base/kdeplasma-addons-4.3.1" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "kde-base/kde-meta-4.3.1" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "world" [argument])
* IMPORTANT: 8 news items need reading for repository 'gentoo'.
* Use eselect news to read news items.
i emerged qt-sql, set "mysql" in use flags and nothing. What exactly does it mean to "Change USE: +mysql)? _________________ Gigabyte MA790X-UD4P Motherboard

Code: | echo "qt-sql mysql" /etc/portage/package.use
emerge -1 qt-sql |
should get x11-libs/qt-sql-4.5.3
or Code: | USE="mysql" emerge -1aD qt-sql" |

I tried:
echo "qt-sql mysql" /etc/portage/package.use
emerge -1 qt-sql
and everything went fine. when i tried to run emerge -e world...same message again.
livecd / # emerge -e world

I went ahead and emerged qt-sql without reading everything in your last response. Everything went fine.
livecd / # emerge --skipfirst --resume
* IMPORTANT: 8 news items need reading for repository 'gentoo'.
* Use eselect news to read news items.
emerge: It seems we have nothing to resume...
* IMPORTANT: 8 news items need reading for repository 'gentoo'.

are there any extra "quotation marks" in this command:

Check your package.use file - it's ONLY one line per package.
If there's more only one gets applied. |

donahue,
i figured it was a typo so i removed the " and everything compiled. i then ran emerge -e world and go this:
New USE for 'x11-libs/qt-sql:4' are incorrectly set. In order to solve
this, adjust USE to satisfy '>=x11-libs/qt-sql-4.5.0:4[mysql]'
from what i can tell one of my use flags for qt-sql is incorrect and i need to change it.. _________________ Gigabyte MA790X-UD4P Motherboard

According to the following I have qt-sql installed with USE="iconv mysql qt3support sqlite -debug (-firebird) -odbc -pch -postgres"

ok, that helps. I will add the flags you posted to my make.conf file. About package.use, for whatever reason it only has one line as of yesterday. Not sure if during this mess lines were erased. Just to make sure I understood, I should add " >=x11-libs/qt-sql-4.5.3 qt3support to

I'm not good with "echo" so I simple fired up nano -w /etc/portage/package.use and added the following line:

substitute >=x11-libs/qt-sql-4.5.1 for >=x11-libs/qt-sql-4.5.3 in package.use
the >= was really missing from >=x11-libs/qt-sql-4.5.3 in package.use ??

just to confirm i went ahead and did the following:
livecd / # exit
exit
livecd gentoo # cd
livecd ~ # umount /mnt/gentoo/boot /mnt/gentoo/dev /mnt/gentoo/proc /mnt/gentoo
livecd ~ # mount /dev/sdc3 /mnt/gentoo
mount: /dev/sdc3 already mounted or /mnt/gentoo busy
mount: according to mtab, /dev/sdc3 is already mounted on /mnt/gentoo
livecd ~ # mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt/gentoo/boot
livecd ~ # mount -t proc none /mnt/gentoo/proc
livecd ~ # mount -o bind /dev /mnt/gentoo/dev
livecd ~ # chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash

livecd / # env-update
>>> Regenerating /etc/ld.so.cache...
livecd / # source /etc/profile
dircolors: `/etc/DIR_COLORS':75: unrecognized keyword HARDLINK
livecd / # export ps1="(chroot) $ps1"
