Hello. I have Gentoo installed on my PC, but the only problem is that it won't boot. A message saying "Scanning for aci7xxx..." comes up and it just locks up on that. I don't know what to do. Can anyone please help? Thanks in advance.

Do you actually have the hardware to match that driver?

Did you compile your kernel using genkernel?

Some more information might be helpful. Post:
- How you compiled your kernel
- Which kernel you're using
- Whether or not you use hardware for the driver in question

If you have nothing to do with the driver in question and you compiled using genkernel or the default kernel config, switch to manual configuration, load your old config file, and disable support for the aci7xxx. Maybe if it doesn't know about it it won't look for it. See if that helps.

If not, sorry I put you through all those hoops...

@bfelger: Yeah, I compiled using genkernel. I'm using the gentoo-sources kernel. Frankly, I thought that aci7xxx was for sda drives. I don't even know why it's scanning... :?:

Iguana,

Try adding noscsi to your boot line and see if that works.

Will noscsi disable SCSI emulation? If it does, CD-R/W drives might stop working.

bfelger,

It might, but he will at least be able to boot into gentoo, then he can roll another kernel without acixxxx drivers so it will not try to load them.

Iguana and Donkey,

This answer is for GRUB, I have not used lilo in too long to answer properly.

At your GRUB boot selector screen, move the highlight bar to highlight the kernel you want to boot, and press a to modify the kernel arguments, once you get your aruments on the screen type a space and noscsi, then hit escape to go back to the menu, then hit enter to boot hte system.

Once in linux, you can edit your grub.conf and add it to the bootline so you do not have to keep typing it in (until you can get the system to boot normally)

@Pete Keller: That didn't work. It seems like the boot sequence doesn't even recognize the "noscsi" command... :(

Is there anything else I can try? I know that Pete Keller suggested noscsi, but that doesn't work, because Gentoo ends up scanning for aci7xxx anyway and then locks up. I've even resintalled. Is there anything else I can do to combat this problem? Thanks in advance.

I'll give some extra info.
I compiled my kernel using genkernel (1.8 i think). The kernel source I used was the 2.4.22-ac4, since the standard kernel didn't support my nforce2 chipset. I've got a Samsung 252B burner, IDE.

I've tried noscsi in a variety of ways, but it doesn't work. Does anybody know another way to disable SCSI scanning so I can recompile with the correct settings? :?:

If the kernel tries to load one module while you don't have this card, then you have to tell the module loader explicitely not to load this. Just add a line that looks like "alias aic7xxx none" in a file like "/etc/modules.autoload" after having verified I'm not telling you bullshit.

Have a look in the doc (search ?...), as it is very much more reliable than I.

But when you use genkernel it will build an initrd, and the initrd try the aic7xxx before the kernel load, and then the system hangs before /etc/modules.autoload will be read ! Or am I false ?

I have exactly this problem with my Toshiba 3000-514. It freeze at boot time just a second after the initrd loading with the last output

---- Scanning for aic7xxx

the nosci option wont work. I installed Gentoo with Knoppix, because the Live CD won't work (same problem) . If I pass noscsi to the Knoppix System it works well, but without it freezes at hw-detection, too

What can I do now to get my Gentoo work ??

I posted this in the French section too, in an other thread, sorry about this, but I think this Solution would be nice here, too

1. Boot Knoppix (with noscsi option, else system freeze due too aic7xxx )
2. Become root in a xterm / konsole
3. mkdir /mnt/gentoo
4. mount the Gentoo root - partition to /mnt/gentoo
5. mount -t proc /proc /mnt/gentoo/proc
6. cp /etc/resolv.conf /mnt/gentoo/etc/resolv.conf
7. mount -o bind /dev /mnt/gentoo/dev
8. chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash
9. env-update
10. source /etc/profile
11. edit /etc/kernels/settings (I just deleted the modules that I don't neet in the Initrd !! )
12. use the genkernel script (I'm too lazy to do it by Hand ) and compile kernel and modules
13. change grub configuration if needed
14. reboot and enjoy Gentoo

Thats all and thats easy. So you can also easy change all the things you need in your Initrd !

Greetings from Germany

Ulli
