I just emerged the new Version of wine and now my Warcraft III gets a little bit further: I can hear the music while it is displaying an error message:
Code: | This application has encountered a critical error:

Press OK to terminate the application. |

Maybe the file is broken? Did you try downloading it from an other source? |

Hmm, yesterday I tried Counter-Strike with this new version of wine. It still runs (the previous version of wine didn't run it, the one before that did).
Works pretty well. It's a little bit slower than playing it under Windows (I use a GF4Ti4400 and play it at 1600x1200), but still very playable.
Voice-support never worked for me (with an SB Live!), but now it at least initializes. Pressing the V-button does transmit something, but not my voice I'm gonna look into my mixer-settings, maybe there's something that'll fix it over there. |

The digest file was incorrect, doing "emerge sync" will fix the problem. |

Castle of the Winds! Woah I haven't played that game in years. Do you have the full version or just shareware?

disclaimer: i am not supporting piracy, this is to help people who can not play games because wine does not support copy protection YET.
the reason you cant play single player is the blasted cd copy protection. the copy protection usually sucks and all that you need to fix it is an unarchiver and an internet connection.
the two sites you should try first are
http://www.gamecopyworld.com/
http://www.megagames.com (look for "Game Fixes")
then just search for it, with gamecopyworld you have to go to the right, once you've picked your mirror and entered, and look for PC Game Index (try this http://gamecopyworld.dreamflow.org/games/gcw_index.shtml but its not guarenteed).
if you can not find your game at either try http://www.ircspy.com and look around irc for the fix.
some require you leave the cd in (backups), with others you can just leave the cd out.
support wine and not winex. winex will not go anywhere as it is not open, as people have said wine is progressing faster than winex.
ps. dont flame me if this is common knowledge to you, others may not know |

WineX uses code consisting of 4 different licenses:
By buying the binaries, you get code which is licensed by InstallShield and Microsoft. Obviously the source of these cannot be distributed. You can however use the CVS version of WineX, considered open-source under the MIT/X11 license, which is what Wine was licensed under until it switched to LGPL.
There is some degree of code swapping between Wine and WineX, but it isn't as easy as it was before Wine switched to the LGPL.
Carry on. |

Actually copy protection is working in some games now. For example, Warcraft 3 can be run without the need for a modified exe, as long as the windows version in the wine config file is set to win2k (nt351, nt40, and winxp also work), and ide-scsi is not enabled.

Isn't the WineX code on sourceforge under the "Alladin" license? _________________ -Zedd |

Actually, setting up the first "Warcraft III" is most probably the easiest thing I've ever done in Linux, if you take away start menus, simple configs, and the install
It took about 15 minutes maximum.
So why shouldn't you be able to play 'Warcraft III: Frozen Throne' - When I get the CD tomorrow I'll try to set it up, shouldn't be hard.
Good luck. _________________ I just came from /dev/null .... |

Without the use of a modified EXE, does this mean that you can play on Battle.net now? If you can get me a confirmation, I'd GREATLY appreciate it![/i] |

I updated to wine-20031016 yesterday and have been able to get further in the insatall of Emperor RotMK but it drops out just after you've chosen an install directory. Before it would break while loading the install shield. Anyone else had any luck, it's a really cool game and I'd like to play it some more.
I could already run the game from a windows install with the nocd crack but the diplomacy is all mixed up making any interesting lvels impossible.
Besides that I already had Warcraft 3 running.

I can confirm that it does allow you to play on battle.net. I was just playing games on there yesterday. |

So I've run wine with warm + fixme debugmsg's and I get no messeges at all, but at the point when it jumps out I get an error window pop up saying
Quote: | error no. 0x80020008 |
Description is blank.
Maybe I just have to wait for the next wine installment
Thanks anyway Moled _________________ Wait, what time is it? |

Hmm maybe I'm going to try it too,
since Diablo 1.10 is out and my vmware doesn't want to display any diablo2 graphics anymore ....
But still .. I hate emulating windows crap,
doesn't matter of its wine/winex/vmware or whatever |

I'll have to try that this weekend to see if I can get Diablo II v1.10 working on my Linux box. Thanks for the tip!
(By the way, how do you disable ide-scsi in Wine?) _________________ I suck at signatures. |

You can't disable it for wine, you just can't use the ide-scsi module for your cdrom (which shouldn't be a problem, since ATAPI burning is now supported so there is no need for ide-scsi). |
