to have something work.
I switched to kde-4 from kde-3.5.
In order to do this cleanly I made a new install.
(my /home is on a separate partition)
Left out a lot of progs I once installed to try and never used later.
Of course I unmasked kde-4.3.4 to have it install.
Today I wanted to use "rawstudio",fired it up but I couldn't get it
to load raw images or anything else for that matter.
The version was 1.1.1-r1.
In desperation I unmasked the next version 1.2.
For good measure I also unmasked "dcraw" and installed 8.98-r1 over 8.73.
(I use a Panasonic lumix dmc fz28 which isn't supported yet by a lot of raw conversion software)
Restarted rawstudio and bingo running like it should.
So far no problems;makes me wonder why are they masked?

Because you didn't open a bug at https://bugs.gentoo.org/ and request stabilization.
- Package should be in Portage 30 days before requesting it stable.
- It shouldn't have any bugs, or at least any regression bugs.
Then request can be filed, as such, https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=297531 |

For dcraw you wait for ~25 days and then check for open bugs at https://bugs.gentoo.org/ and if there's none, you open a stable request bug for it...
Wait? Why? To give users time to report bugs. |

Thanks for the reply.
The date for rawstudio-1.2 is aug 8.
For dcraw it's dec 14.
So for the latter I can understand, but not for rawstudio.
I'll check the links you supplied.
Thanks again.

Manpower.
There's simply not enough manpower to keep every package in the tree right up-to-date, especially when it comes to stabilization. As such, many libraries only get considered for stabilizing new versions when a new version of something that depends on them needs a newer version of the library, or a bug crops up that is fixed in a newer version. |

In fact, look are the Gnome Gentoo team, they are 8 devs but actually there is only 4 devs that are active right now. I know 1/4 of the Gentoo Gnome team, so yes we really need more manpower. |
