KDE login ok - then big session screen

I am almost there - KDE. I followed the instructions for KDE after floundering around trying different things, and when I rebooted the first time it went right into KDE on bootup, I logged in and everything looked good. After turning the pC on next time I was in console mode, when I do startx, I get the KDE 3 login screen and then it goes to a pick a session screen. If I cancel out of the session screen, it goes back to KDE login. I must have done something prior to following the procedures. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.
