|
|
I emerged kmplayer and as soon as it finished, the x server froze and I had to reset (ctrl + alt + bs didn't work).
When I boot again, I had 2 errors during booting:
Quote: | /usr/X11R6/bin/mkfontdir: error while loading shared libraries: libXFont.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory.
* Scanning font firectories...
* Starting X Font Server...
/usr/X11R6/bin/xfs: error while loading shared libraries: libXFont.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory. |
When I do a "startx" I get:
Quote: | xauth: error while loading shares libraries: libXau.so.6: cannot.... |
I tried re-emerging XFree as probably everybody will advice me, but "emerge" doesn't work.
Now, I imagine I will have to boot with the live cd, mount my / and re-emerge XFree. What else should I re-emerge?
hmmm...Am I taking the long way to solve this? Maybe someone knows of a shorter way...
Thanks |

emerge doesn't work? Write here your error message to decide what went wrong. |

Anyone? I just wanna know if just re-emerging xfree will fix everything. Or if there's another way to fix it. Also, the problem with emerge.
I'll appreciate any help |

My system is so borked, that command does not work! my /etc/ld.so.conf will have to be manually edited or something. ldconfig returns no errors but does nothing. May have to reinstall (groan). My ld.so.conf just had gibberish in it when I opened it in nano.
Why is linux so fragile? It never used to be this fragile.... I'd hard-reset and it would just bounce back. Maybe ldconfig should be added to the default runlevel or something.
Does prelinking increase the severity of these snafus? I am beginning to suspect so. |

Some tips to avoid such goings-on in the future:
1. Use vanilla kernel sources
2. Avoid anything new and potentially unstable (nptl, prelink, 2.6 kernels, etc.)
3. Above all else, two words -- Magic SysRq. Look it up. You'll love it. |
