I emerged dbus alsa and pulse, dbus starts as a deamon in runlevel default. When I try to run pulseuadio as an ordinary user I get
pulseaudio
E: shm.c: shm_open() failed: Permission denied
W: core.c: failed to allocate shared memory pool. Falling back to a normal memory pool.
E: module-console-kit.c: GetSessionsForUnixUser() call failed: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.freedesktop.ConsoleKit was not provided by any .service files
E: module.c: Failed to load module "module-console-kit" (argument: ""): initialization failed.
E: main.c: Module load failed.
E: main.c: Failed to initialize daemon.
I've followed the WIKI, actually it doesnt say much besides install pulse and run it. What is wrong?
Edit: And of course I see that it wants something cosolekit related (which I have not installed). But since it is not a dependency I wonder what is wrong so that it tries to use it. |

you can try to comment out the console-kit module from /etc/pulse/default.pa, like this:
Code: |
### If autoexit on idle is enabled we want to make sure we only quit
### when no local session needs us anymore.
#load-module module-console-kit
|
then try to start PA |

aCOSwt: what's your suggestion?
adujazz: Yep, that worked, not a signle error any more. What is console-kit used for and why is it enabled by detault although its is not a dependency? A bug?
Thansk everyone |

1/ Think about what you need pulseaudio for.
- You need a serious working widespread efficient sound server ? => Opt for Jack !
- You want pulseaudio because your favourite app (I hardly imagine more than one) is compatible with Pulse and not with Jack ? => Use default alsa output for that app and redirect the default alsa output to jack via some asound.conf
- You just need a mixer ? => Opt for dmix !
2/ Read this interesting thread https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-813609-start-0-postdays-0-postorder-asc-highlight-pulseaudio.html
In which one you will read some guru's + one Gentoo Dev opinions about this @##@!! piece of @&&!!# software.
Nota :... Maybe... you could start with 2/ just in order to consider that it is actually worth avoiding pulse.
Even Ubuntuers (In which pulse is THE solution imposed by default) try to get rid of it ! |
