Plugging in USB device causes immediate restart

I have an iPod Touch that I charge from my desktop at work. Recently, I have experienced an issue where connecting the iPod occasionally causes my computer to immediately restart.

My /var/log/messages does not seem to have any pertinent information:

is it only with that ipod or any other usb device, even low-power devices

ie could it be that usb controller is a low-power port and in using it to power the ipod it has been degraded enough to cause the usb driver to have a fubar?

Restart related to usb is generally caused by power issue, i.e. your computer cannot provide enough power via usb.

Is your iPod the only usb device connected? Can you try with a powered usb hub?

I have a Dell Dimension E520, and the iPod is currently plugged into one of the front ports. I'm not sure how to tell if the port supports high power or not.
