|
|
I have an iPod Touch that I charge from my desktop at work. Recently, I have experienced an issue where connecting the iPod occasionally causes my computer to immediately restart.
My /var/log/messages does not seem to have any pertinent information:
Code: | Feb 9 11:26:14 localhost kernel: usb 1-3: USB disconnect, address 29
Feb 9 11:29:04 localhost syslog-ng[2720]: syslog-ng starting up; version='3.1.3'
|
You can see that I unplugged the iPod and walked away, and when I plug it in again the machine restarts. No message is able to make it to the syslog until the machine has started up a bit.
This problem seems recent (like in the past 6 months) but I was not tracking anything useful, like when I last updated my kernel. It does not happen every time I connect it, so it has been hard to narrow down a cause.
I'd be happy to provide further information, but not sure what I should start with...
Code: | # uname -a
Linux jpg-melchior 2.6.36-gentoo-r5 #1 SMP Mon Jan 3 14:46:22 EST 2011 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 4300 @ 1.80GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux |

is it only with that ipod or any other usb device, even low-power devices
ie could it be that usb controller is a low-power port and in using it to power the ipod it has been degraded enough to cause the usb driver to have a fubar? _________________ #define HelloWorld int

Restart related to usb is generally caused by power issue, i.e. your computer cannot provide enough power via usb.
Is your iPod the only usb device connected? Can you try with a powered usb hub? _________________ Powered by Gentoo Linux since 2003 |

I have a Dell Dimension E520, and the iPod is currently plugged into one of the front ports. I'm not sure how to tell if the port supports high power or not.
Here is the output from lsusb -v (I'm only including the iPod and the root hub, let me know if I removed too much):

This is the only device I plug and unplug regularly, so I'm not sure about other devices. I also have two USB keyboards and a trackball, but those don't seem to be on the same bus (according to lsusb), so I'm not sure how much that would matter. |
