Hi all,

I've been using Gentoo for about 4 months now (and it absolutely rocks :wink: ), but last week I was forced to do a hard reset of my laptop, due to a power crash. I needed to remove the battery as well as the ac-adapter in order to reboot the machine. (it was completely frozen, even my reset button refused to work :cry: ) Unfortunatly I couldn't boot the machine into gentoo anymore, the filesystem (Reiserfs) was damaged badly)

I just finished a fresh install off gentoo 1.1a (downloaded the new boot-cd yesterday) and immediately after the first reboot I get this error message:
Code:

VFS: Mounted root (ext3 filesystem) readonly.
Warning: unable to mount devfs, err: -2
Freeing unused kernel memory: 244k freed
Warning: unable to open an initial console.
Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel.

I already checked the kernel configuration for devfs, which is enabled, see my .
Code:

...
CONFIG_PROC_FS=y
CONFIG_DEVFS_FS=y
CONFIG_DEVFS_MOUNT=y
# CONFIG_DEVFS_DEBUG is not set
# CONFIG_DEVPTS_FS is not set
...

I really don't know what I've done wrong during the install, I guess it's a problem in the kernel configuration, maybe I forgot to enable something. :?:

Some info about my hardware: (Sony VAIO PCG-Z600 TEK)

    * P III 700 MHZ
    * 128 MB SDRAM
    * 20 GB IBM-DSJA 220
    * external cdrom (pcmcia) and fdd(usb)

Does anybody have any suggestions how to solve this boot problem :?:

Any help appreciated, Arnold

Problem solved! :D

While checking all changes I've made to my system last week, I discovered a mistake in /boot/grub/menu.lst
I changed my partition configuration, but forgot to change the partition number for the root-partition in menu.lst :oops:

Fenrir's problem was split off to here as it seemed to be taking on a life of its own.

The configuration file for older versions of GRUB (0.90 and earlier) is called menu.lst
In the current versions of GRUB, it is called grub.conf

You can find it at /boot/grub/grub.conf after mounting your /boot partition.
