There are so few changes from -10 that I'm not bothering with it until mm-sources are in Portage.

How long for an ebuild?
I know I could just get it from kernel.org, but I'm lazy and feel dirty using anything that doesn't come from Portage. |

Just take your test 10 ebuild and rename it changing the 10 to an 11, you could be nicer though, and find a kernel.org mirror and use that. _________________ "Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we, they never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we." Is the preempt fixed in test11?
That would make me upgrade now. |

I can't wait for this bad boy to go "official" and be released in Portage. I'm still a bit timid about running "unstable" code. _________________ I suck at signatures. |

Why? It seems extremely stable to me... I'm, on test11 now and hope preempt is fixed...
I love it, it's a clear performance boost over 2.4, plus I can run the latest stuff...
I am not using the ~x86 flags since I had errors previously... But I am running test11 |

if your system is not a production system, this kernel should be more than stable enough.
However even with a production System I would think about trying it out, due to the perfomance gains compared to the 2.4 series. |

But, compiling a new kernel is fun.

Yes compiling kernels is fun. I get the same feeling I got on christmas when I was around 10 and got to open all these nice presents. You know something good is on the way... at least most of the time _________________ if only I could fill my heart with love... |

Yeah, I can't tell any difference between test10 and test11 so far. The only thing I wish is that they would apply the bootsplash patch into the kernel, so I don't have to every time. _________________ Me |

That's what I'm using... bootsplash and supermount added in. They'll be gentoo-sources when 2.6 goes official. |

Wow, I knew there had to be some difference in the sources, I just hadn't figured out what yet. Thanks for the tip! That'll definitely be the next I try. _________________ Me |

Well, it looks like I have some testing to do. First, gentoo-dev, then love-, then who knows, I might like some of the mm patches. Or wait, maybe I can mix and match the patches that would affect me. Ah, you gentoo kernel people are crazy. I normally like choice, but it sure is time consuming merging three different sources you want to try out. Maybe I should start a poll- "Which 2.6 patchset is best?" _________________ Me |

The mm patchsets are usually included in love-sources, so that saves you a bit of work _________________ Per Ardua Ad Astra

I've spent a good portion of today getting 2.6.0-test11 going, up from 2.4.20-r8 and so far so good. Got my video, sound and externel serial modem going - yay.
Only one bizarre problem, vi segmentation faults now (only vi so far), it's really strange... have tried re-emerging vi, no luck though. Small files don't seem to be affected???
Can someone else with 2.6.0-test11 try doing:
Code: | vi /usr/src/linux-beta/.config
or
vi /usr/src/linux/.config |
see if it seg faults on you? |

Works fine here.
vanilla 2.6.0-test11 (.config copied from test10, make oldconfig in test11)
Did you try moving your .vim* files around? |

Now that 2.6 development has really 'settled down', I thought I'd give it a shot (with gentoo-dev-sources).
I've gotten to the point where it boots without many problems, but nvidia won't work with me. I remerged nvidia-kernel and nvidia-glx and it does load the nvidia module. The X error tells me that it can't find /dev/nvidiactl :/ Any way I can solve this? Putting everything back in order, remerging nvidia-* with kernel 2.4.20 (gentoo-sources)makes it work again. |

PARENA make sure the 2.6 kernel you are currently using is linked to /usr/src/linux otherwise building the nvidia drivers fail miserably. |

Yeah, I know. Just to be clear, this is what I did:
Code: | cd /usr/src
rm linux
ln -s /usr/src/linux-2.6.0-test11-gentoo linux
cd linux
make menuconfig
---bla bla make the whole thing and stuff---
emerge nvidia-kernel nvidia-glx (it emerged for the 2.6 kernel I saw, and it removed my old instance) |
I even did a reboot after that, but to no avail. I compiled in devfs support, so that's not the problem either. I'm clueless here, this is usually good when playing with the 2.4 kernel. :/ |
