[solved] booting gentoo amd64 minimal on MacBook Pro

It's definitely amd64 -- it loads the kernel -- but the keyboard doesn't work and it can't mount the cdrom. Is there another variant to try? should I try plain x86?

A recent SystemRescueCD boots on the sucker with console, disk, and network. good enough.
