I've been a big fan of the SheevaPlug; however, when one of my plugs died because of the built-in power supply failing, I realized it was nothing more than novelty and cannot be relied upon for serious stuff. The reports of other SheevaPlug power supplies failing and the surprising 30 day warranty from the vendor causes me to post an inquiry here for an alternative.
Can anyone recommend an alternative to the SheevaPlug? I've really enjoyed building Gentoo on the SheevaPlug and pretty much having any application working thereon. I even set up cross-compiling with some of my powerful machines. I have some projects that could use a fully capable server running on a small footprint and drawing less than 30 watts. Does anyone have any recommendations of hardware that has a proven ability to run Gentoo's Linux on it? |

I heard good things about the Efika from Genesi and IIRC, some Gentoo devs have one and are maintaining stages for it.

No alternative, but you can easily remove the damaged power-supply of your SheevaPlug and replace it by an external power source. A common 5V power supply will suffice as long as it is able to provide 1A (= 1000 mA) or more. It will cost you less than 5 EUR (~7 USD) to obtain one.

Later this month, the Raspberry Pi will be on sale for $35 (Model B). Without case/PSU/HDD, but still.
If you are willing to consider x86, the ZBox nano AD10 will set you back around $250. Power consumption is between 11-25W. |

I'm very interested by this Rasberry Pi. But :
- will it be fully supported under Gentoo ? (any document for that ?)
- I have the need to convert on the fly some AVI/MP4/... to MPEG 2 (for broadcast to my settop box). Is this device powerful enough for that ? I know it has some hardware to decode MP4 but I wonder if it can transcode as well for a network broadcast.

| The Raspberry Pi will be shipped with Fedora, so it is very likely that Gentoo will run on it as well. For some graphics functions, proprietary software is necessary though. I don't expect that it will have the ability to transcode H.264 in realtime. |
