I recently did a "emerge world" update and after it was done updating , i installed drivers for x11-xorg and then tried to reboot and no xdm or x when i type "startx". Im currently using sysresccd and when trying to chroot into my system im getting the following error:
Code: |
chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash
chroot: failed to run command `/bin/bash': Exec format error

snakeo2,
You are trying to chroot from a 32 bit environment to a 64 bit environment, or vice versa.
SystemRescueCD boots 32 bit by defualt. To boot into 64 bit you have to ask it. Read the menu when it boots.
You cannot chroot from 32 to 64 bit, 64 bit to 32 bit is possible but you don't need it. _________________ Regards,

Also there is no point in using rescue cd if you are able to login, but just X does not work. You can fix X from console as well. |

went ahead and recompiled the kernel, enabled KMS, re-emerged xorg-server, x11-drivers, ran revdep-rebuild and now when i run "startx" i'm now able to get xcfe running. However, when i boot, xdm is not working. I've edited my /etc/conf.d/xdm and selected "kdm" as my preferred display manager but it's not working. Any ideas are welcomed. _________________ Gigabyte MA790X-UD4P Motherboard

Hi,
As root, run rc-update add xdm default
You also want to make sure that dbus is in the default runlevel as well. To do that, as root, run rc-update | grep dbus
If dbus is not in the default runlevel, then add it as root by running rc-update add dbus default |

xdm has been added to run default level, dbus as well:
Code: |
rc-update | grep dbus
dbus | default
rc-update add xdm default
* rc-update: xdm already installed in runlevel `default'; skipping
|
here is my /etc/conf.d/xdm:
Code: |
cat /etc/conf.d/xdm
# We always try and start X on a static VT. The various DMs normally default
# to using VT7. If you wish to use the xdm init script, then you should ensure
# that the VT checked is the same VT your DM wants to use. We do this check to
# ensure that you haven't accidentally configured something to run on the VT
# in your /etc/inittab file so that you don't get a dead keyboard.
CHECKVT=7
# What display manager do you use ? [ xdm | gdm | kdm | kdm-4.3 | gpe | entrance ]
# NOTE: If this is set in /etc/rc.conf, that setting will override this one.
#
# KDE-specific note:
# - If you are using kdeprefix go with "kdm-4.Y", e.g. "kdm-4.3".
# You can find possible versions by looking at the directories in /usr/kde/.
# - Else, if you are using KDE 3 enter "kdm-3.5"
# - Else, if you are using KDE 4 enter "kdm" without a version

left the last part out:

Went ahead and added the following line to my /etc/env.d/90xsession
Code: |
cat /etc/env.d/90xsession
XSESSION="kdm"
|
Rebooted and still no xdm. Logged in and ran "startx" and still defaulting to Xcfe. _________________ Gigabyte MA790X-UD4P Motherboard

It may sound silly, but... do you have kdm installed? If yes, then take a look at /var/log/kdm.log (or xdm.log or similar). |

No idea if this could produce such results (I never used a login-manager even and this could be post-time error), but I spy with my eye"kdm"" instead of "kdm" and as for Xfce starting up, do you have it set in your .xinitrc? _________________ Kindest of regardses. |

@chiitto
Thanks much. An "ugh" moment..that was it....removed the extra quotes and kdm started right up. Time to mark this thread solved and start a new one for "migrating to rc.conf"....getting tons of errors for that everytime i boot up. _________________ Gigabyte MA790X-UD4P Motherboard
