I have a Radeon HD 4850, the Gallium driver has been working fine for ages. Suddenly, on upgrading to mesa-8.0:
Code: | prison mesa # eselect mesa set --auto
!!! Warning: Invalid selection: 64bit r600 gallium.
!!! Warning: Invalid selection: 32bit r300 gallium.
!!! Warning: Invalid selection: 32bit r600 gallium.

Yeah, it's still broken in 9999 but it is fixed in the 8.0.1 ebuild. Just have to wait for the X11 overlay to catch up. |

/me just wondering whether "intel" is sufficient for VIDEO_CARDS of an Intel GM45 chip within a ThinkPad T400 for mesa-8.01 or should I add "i965" too ? |

"intel" is sufficient and appropriate. If you want to get more specific and fine-tuned, you can do what I do, which is to add this line to package.use:
Code: | media-libs/mesa -video_cards_intel video_cards_i965
|
Since, mesa is currently the only package to recognize specific video card models. |

I'm installed 8.0.2 few days ago - but sometimes my KDE falls back from OpenGL to Xrender due to intel driver issues. |

This appears to be a problem when you upgrade from mesa-7.11 with still classic drivers eselected to a version which has classic dropped (like -9999).
A workaround is to copy /usr/portage/media-libs/mesa/files/eselect-mesa.conf.7.11 to /usr/share/mesa/eselect-mesa.conf |
