First let me apologize if this post should be broken out into individual questions. If that is the case let me know and I will do so.
Having said that, I am very close to trying to install Gentoo on my 64 bit laptop which is a Samsung Series 7. The specs can be found here: http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/laptops/NP700Z5B-S01UB-specs
I have been running Gentoo from the live-cd and have noticed a couple of things that make me hesitate to proceed with the installation and am curious if I will have the same problems once installed and if so are there solutions.
In brief,
1) Fan is always running.
2) Touchpad doesn't work.
3) Wifi isn't detected/working.
4) Can't mount encrypted home. https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-925664-highlight-.html and https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-926742-highlight-.html
5) None of fn keys work except for volume up and down.
Any suggestions ideas would be appreciated. |

All of these should be easily resolved once you do your "real" install.
In the case of ecryptfs, it's possible the livecd may not have the requisite tools to handle ecryptfs, but it's certainly workable: http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Ecryptfs
wifi - just requires the right driver, right userspace tools, and firmware (if applicable). Wireless in gentoo is very much not a turnkey "it just works" thing as it is in ubuntu, but it certainly should work.
I would be very surprised if we could not get your touchpad working as well, but of course, it's easy to do with a "real" install than it is with a live image, since you can install/uninstall configure/reconfigure things.

You can likely get *most* of these to work, if not all. Just a question of which ones work "out of the box" and which ones you have to manually map.
In general, if you have the drivers you need - which, if ubuntu has em, we do too - you can get anything to work, with varying degrees of elbow grease required.
lspci and lsusb give a good picture of what you actually need. _________________ Lost configuring your system?

Thank you so much for the reply. I feel a little better about proceeding with the install. I have a feeling it will be a long night though. Haha.
The only thing that makes me really nervous is the encrypted Home. Mostly because it is not an area I am comfortable with but I have already backed it up onto an external drive. Just as a side note is there a way to do full disk encryption in gentoo?
Should have some feedback this weekend.
Thanks again. |

if the ecryptfs is a real issue for your install you can use another linux live cd that supports it as long as it includes chroot. If you need to install via wireless then you may need to anyway. You can do this because nothing from your install media is used in the final install. All you really need is a tool box.
EDIT: ohh... missed your post.
Yes you can encrypt everything but /boot. Its a bit complicated but it can be done. It is not ideal to do so for your first install.
some info here:

I'm too tired look up more documentation to post. You can use google. I assure you it exists. _________________ First things first, but not necessarily in that order.
Apologies if I take a while to respond. I'm currently working on the dematerialization circuit for my blue box. |

Thanks for the replies. Yes I've used google extensively but what isn't clear to me, that maybe I can get answered here, is if Gentoo during the install will recognize my encrypted partition and take care of mounting etc? It of course would need my key at some point. OR, is this something that I will have to deal with post-install? |

Budoka ... /home is not really required during the install stage, so mounting can be taken care of post install, and as has been mention you can technically install Gentoo from another install disk that supports encyptfs so you could have it available should you so wish. When installing all you need is the means to access the stage3, portage-snapshot, and sources (usaually, via a network connection), the handbook (again, via a network connection) and some time. Once you have the basic install and can reboot then you can take care of any additonal configuration, mounts, etc.
HTH & best ...

I have had no success what-so-ever mounting my encrypted HOME to date. Feel like I am banging my head against a wall but it is OK. I hasve proceeded to try to install Gentoo and will deal with HOME after I get a working system up and running. WAill definitely be more to come after that concerning encrypted directory. Until then I started another thread about an installation question.

I didn't want to clutter this one with too many questions. Hope that was proper netiquette. If not let me know and I will repost here.[/quote] |
