...aRts won't compile with -O3 using GCC 3.2; you'll receive a "symbol is already defined" error. Manually merging aRts with -O2 set in the Make profile did the trick. You can then continue merging KDE. Hope this helps! |

# cp /etc/make.conf /tmp
# nano -w /etc/make.conf
[Now find the section that has CHOST, CLAGS and CXXFLAGS uncommented -- these are your current build settings. Change the -O3 flag to -O2. Exit and save.]
# emerge arts
# mv /tmp/make.conf /etc
# emerge kde |

I'm having the same problem. I tried putting more mirrors in /etc/make.conf and it tried them all... but still no luck (maybe I need to try all the mirrors?! ).
I found the file here in Google:
http://ftp.se.kde.org/pub/kde/stable/3.0.2/src/
- but I can't work out how to make emerge use it. |

Try upgrading or remerging portage:
# emerge portage
That usually fixes any outstanding mirror bugs. |

It did indeed, thanks. Actually I did an emerge --update world, which maybe I would have deferred until later if I knew it would take five hours.
Anyway, the lessons learned here (for anyone in the same boat):
1. If you've installed from the stage 3 tarball, it still seems like a good idea to update stuff first (as above) before adding to the system. Well, it was for me.
2. If you do so, run it overnight or something (or just update portage)! Lucky I'm playing in a virtual machine so I didn't cause a problem.
Gentoo's a bit scary for me, but I kind of like it! |

I'm sure you will start to love it, because if your installation is finished (I know, software and installation never finish's) it's your little baby you have build up from the ground ;o)
