I know this is slightly off Gentoo topic, but erm... it's my only hope!

I've gotta local network, roadrunner (cable), shared through a router. Several gentoo boxen, several windows boxen (all for family members, i'm converting um slowly)

anyways, all our IM's log us out every five minutes or so, not even actually logging out, just the message stop getting recieved, like it gets outa sync.

My fileserver has all ports forwarded to it, and dosn't get this.

Strange, eh? IM never had this issue before..

any clue? Please Please?

Is your router configured correctly for incoming/outgoing IM traffic?

Its possible that by specifically sending _all_ the ports to your fileserver (which is a BAD idea btw) that when the AIM servers try to ping your other computers, the port (5190 I believe) gets sent to your fileserver (which would account for it not having a problem staying online) I recommend you ONLY forward the ports you need to your fileserver and close all the other ones. To use AIM you do not need to have a specific port forwarded to a specific computer.

The most common ports for a fileserver:

SSH: 22
FTP: 21
SMP: 25 (generally a bad idea- opens a relay to spammers)
etc
