Okay, I've never overclocked a computer before. First, I need to know whether overclocking a P4 1.5ghz is even possible. If it is, is it recommended? How much of an improvement can I expect it to have. I plan to have Gentoo on it.

Let's say that it is overclockable and recommended. How would I overclock it? I have absolutely no clue on how to go about this. An internet document/tutorial or explanation would be very appreciated. Thanks.

overclocking is done in bios by changeing the clock frequences, p4's run pretty hot and gentoo can hardwork for hardware there are plenty of websites kicking about but presonally i woulnt bother, if you are just trying to speedup compile times it will probably melt on you and after christmas youll probably see a bunch of 2.4ghz on ebay cheep they are already about £85 and i hear they are clockable to 3ghz

Today's CPUs are so fast I don't believe that overclocking is worth the risk. These days the real bottleneck of a PC is the hard drive.

Still, if you wish to learn about overclocking then I would suggest a google search on overclocking.

I have a P4 Dell that is a 1.5ghz machine and overclocking is not worth your while... I got very slight improvements in compiling (maybe 1-2 minutes difference) and my benchmark tests were almost the exact same.
