I'm trying to set up phpbb to send emails for my forum and i want to set up an email server for this
The only problem is that all the guides i have read have shown how to forward email to your ISP so that they can route it....
My ISP doesnt provide this service for me so i want to set up my own email server that can send email directly but i have no idea where to start.
Can anyone give me a few hints please
MJ

The gentoo docs have good information how to achieve this.

The virtual mail guide might be a bit drastic. Just make sure you have postfix installed and configured.

Code:
emerge postfix

Code:
vi /etc/postfix/main.cf

you'll want to change a few things so only the local server can send mail.

Code:

myhostname = your.host.name (ie host.mydomain.com)
mydomain = host.name (ie mydomain.com)
mynetworks = 127.0.0.0/8

then

Code:

/etc/init.d/postfix start
rc-update add postfix default

That's the bare minimums that will get you by if you ONLY want your phpbb forum to be able to send out mail and keep you from being picked up by spamassassin for open relays or whatnot.

otherwise in phpbb, you'll notice in the configuration towards the bottom. You only need an smtp server. I have a hard time believing there's an ISP that doesn't have mail services for it's users. They might not want to give you that information, but I'm sure they have it. If you have an e-mail address with them, you have a mail server you can use. Just use their outgoing mail server address just as it is set in your mail client and there you go.

no really - when i brought the dsl line they specifically stated that it contained no webspace or any email or other facilities - it was about £5 a month cheaper than the other lines :P
