| Being a Mandrake user, I've read several threads on it's forum about what a good, fast distro Gentoo is. I've printed out the installation instructions and have burned the ISO, so I'm ready to go forward with a Gentoo install. I'm sure I'll be posting the usual dumb questions.....be gentle with me....I'm gonna do this and make it work! |

Well, I got Gentoo installed. Actually it was a lot of fun and enjoyable. Only problems was when I didn't follow the instructions. Now to get X up and running by figuring out how to download the various binary packages with Portage. Have a lot of reading to do first. Oh, I didn't configure GRUB quite right as I was unable to get into Mandrake so I could write this and print the other howtos. I repaired lilo so that I could, now to get back into Gentoo I'll have to figure that out.

Just a quick followup......X and KDE3 is up and running! This is the fastest Linux, or any O.S., I've ever used that used a GUI. Building it reminded me of doing the Linux-From-Scratch last year, except I succeeded here. Hats off to everyone involved....I couldn't be happier.
