I've just tried connecting my HP 850 camera (USB Mass Storage) to a friend's computer running Mandrake 9.2. In the nice mandrake way, it just popped up nicely... additionally, I didn't have to unmount it when I disconnected it. It just worked. Like in Windows. In my installation of Gentoo, however, I must unmount the camera first, or otherwise the camera won't turn on (basically, it wouldn't have turned off, I guess) until I reconnect it and unmount it. Is it possible to change this? How does Mandrake solve this?

I'm very happy with hotplug and supermount.
Look at this thread.

If it helps you, adding a line with the camera's /dev/ and mount point to fstab enable you to right click on the gnome desktop (if you are using gnome), select Disks>Camera and it appears mounted. To unmount, right click on camera's icon>unmount.

I know how to mount and unmount easily... my personal favorite is doing it with gkrellm. It's more of a nag issue, actually:
When I plug in my camera and mount it, then unmount it before turning it off, everything is just dandy. The problem is that sometimes I forget to unmount it.
Now, if I unplug the camera, everything is fine (using sync and dirsync for mounting), and it automatically turns itself off. However, if I turn the camera off when it's mounted, it waits for me to unmount it before shutting off. If I disconnect it, it won't turn back on until I reconnect it and unmount it, or take the batteries out. However - in Windows XP, turning the camera off causes it to be unmounted by the system. I'm pretty sure this happens in Mandrake Linux too, probably with supermount. So I need something that'll capture the camera-shutdown event (dmesg and /var/log/everything current don't see it)... I guess I'll go ahead and give supermount a try then.
