| So this is pretty random. We have some Oracle Sun SPARC T5440's with the T2+ processor. We are currently running Solaris 11 with weblogic 11g for our production environment. At some point its looking like we are going to want to drop our support on these (hence losing updates). Anyone have any experience running a production environment on gentoo with one of these bad boys? How is the performance with Gentoo? Definitely would be my first foray into using gentoo for prod but wouldn't be a huge problem. Let me know your thoughts on this. |

That's something I've always wanted to try, but I doubt my employer (a very large bank) would ever let me do so. Keep in mind that most of the early T-series are fairly similar so instructions for the T2000 through the T3's (and obviously the T5240) will likely apply )a quick search found this). Before doing the whole server, you may want to give Gentoo a go within a LDom, actually that may be a better thing to do in the long run anyways as those large T-series are really designed to be partioned out with LDoms or Zones. I would be very curious how the linux scheduler would handle so many hardware threadsif you exposed it to the whole box (I always wanted to run "make -j256 ...").
However my gut reaction is that this may be one of those things that you could do, but not something you should do. While I'm a big fan of Linux, and I do think running on this hardware is possible, I highly doubt it would run anywhere near as well as Solaris 10 or 11. As you're probably aware, the T-series architecture is fairly specialized, and I don't believe the quality of code optimization that GCC would produce would be anywhere near as good as Solaris Studio. Anyways, good luck, and if you do get this done, please post the results. |

| I will definitely let you know how it goes if and when I try it. Its crazy because you can get one of these boxes used now for cheap money. We paid a ton for these things brand new years ago. |

Not sure about those, but I did run gentoo on a Netra X1 back in a day (2005 or so), and it was fun.

Hmmmm..... Not sure what your definition of cheap but I just did a quick search on the net and found a few for 20K+
All the same and awesome machine, I too would love to type "make -j256"
I would love to hear how this turns out. The last Sparc I touched was a Sparc 20, circa 1995, but I really like the architecture and dislike the OS.I'm somewhat in agreement with sdnick484. I'm not sure this will end as well as I would like it to. Regardless, keep us posted!! |
