I am using 2.6.1 with my nForce2 and it runs beautifully - just make absolutely sure that you either disable ACPI in your BIOS or in the kernel. On my board (Asus A7N8X Deluxe), enabling ACPI would crash my machine after about 30 seconds of use.

As for SATA, I have heard good reports, but I have yet to get me a drive ;)

Yup. I run 2.6.1-mm2 on my DFI Lanparty NFII Ultra B with a hitachi 80GB SATA disk as the only harddrive. It works fine :) And this mobo does not have the usual silicon image 3112, but the newer 3114 SATA controller. Strangely enough, I had to patch this kernel to make it work even though the docs said it was included in the mm2 release. But now it works fine. There were some problems getting it to install though, since neither the livecd nor knoppix found the controller. I had to compile a custom kernel and put that one on the livecd to make it work.

See this thread for a howto: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=21327

EDIT: And no, I haven't tried ACPI, although I think it's activated in the BIOS.

Zhen i'm running a 2.6.1 kern on the same mobo as you and i have acpi enabled and everything works fine. Are you sure you aren't talking about APIC instead of ACPI?? Nforce2 APIC has a known issue in the 2.6.1 wich the machine hard-lock however there are 2 patches to solve this.

Zhen I mix them up all the time :)
As for the patches i think they are available in mm-sources (just search the break-out dir wich has the full patches used and get them, of course love-sources has them also :) )
