whenever i try to login with some non-root account i get a bunch of weird error messages, but they have no error messages. then i get a black background, no desktop, no nothin. currently i am using gnome, im tryin to emerge kde, but that aint wrking, but thats a different problem all together. I was wonderin if maybe it had to do with some wrong file permission setting or somethin, i dunno, im pretty much lost. _________________ ~executioner |

Before anyone can understand what you're talking about, we need the exact error messages. You need to be more specific. _________________ "Vidar, Odin's mighty son, he will come to slay the wolf

thats the thing, there is no message in them. all that comes up is the message box with the (!) icon and no message at all. about 5-7 of these come up, and thats all. _________________ ~executioner |

Did you try re-emerging the gnome packages? Just a hunch, but specifically I would look at pango. Does X itself start up fine? _________________ "Vidar, Odin's mighty son, he will come to slay the wolf

No, you just type the package you want to emerge again, so for pango, just "emerge pango". However, for metapackages like "kde" and "gnome", you can't do that because they don't actually do anything, but just "depend" on all the packages required. In that case, I would open the actual ebuild in the text editor of your choice and emerge each of the packages by hand -- that is if you want to re-emerge them.
That said, that might not even be the problem, I'm not really sure. You can't tell what the problem is if you can't see the error messages. _________________ "Vidar, Odin's mighty son, he will come to slay the wolf
