I have been having a problem I should not have been persisting with, but, since a reboot fixes it, for a short while have put the problem aside.

I started with LXDE, and am most happy with that desktop. However a problem developed whereby the GUI started behaving oddly:
- Cannot ALT-TAB between apps.
- Panel doesn't allow app switching.
- Apps no longer respond to mouse clicks, other times new tabs in a browser respond, but not older ones.

Knowing I'll get no help on LXDE as it's 'old' (I'm on an old dell e4300) I moved to LXQT. This did not fix the problem.

Only reason I reboot is due to this. Emerged -Dau world is up to date. Freshly synced. As much as possible everything is stable only. Sometime I can manage to use keyboard shortcuts to get lxterminal up and kill of X, which restarts, and is mostly ok for a short while. So, I suspect the problem is there. Looking at the last books x.org however I see nothing wrong.

x.org.0.log.old (I hope this is the last boot) has only a startup and the shurdown 12000 seconds later. Nothing between.

What would you look at next?

What about testing LXDE components separately?
  • emerge fluxbox[-systray -toolbar]
  • deactivate your display manager
  • echo "exec startfluxbox" > ~/.xinitrc
  • start fluxbox using startx
  • then start testing the single lxde components
