PostPosted: Sun Aug 06, 2017 8:14 pm    Post subject: [solved] GPU hangs when using OpenOffice/LibreOffice Writer Reply with quote

Hi,

I've experienced a strange issue since yesterday that is the most annoying thing that ever happened to me on linux. When I open a document in libreoffice-bin or openoffice-bin and type something, the GPU hangs after some time varying between a few seconds (especially openoffice-bin) and 30 minutes.

The error message is

Code:
Aug  6 19:55:36 tux kernel: [38917.772789] mce: [Hardware Error]: Machine check events logged
Aug  6 19:55:55 tux root: ACPI event unhandled: battery PNP0C0A:00 00000080 00000001
Aug  6 20:46:03 tux kernel: [41944.735575] [drm] GPU HANG: ecode 9:0:0x85dffffb, in X [5050], reason: Hang on render ring, action: reset
Aug  6 20:46:03 tux kernel: [41944.735577] [drm] GPU hangs can indicate a bug anywhere in the entire gfx stack, including userspace.
Aug  6 20:46:03 tux kernel: [41944.735577] [drm] Please file a _new_ bug report on bugs.freedesktop.org against DRI -> DRM/Intel
Aug  6 20:46:03 tux kernel: [41944.735578] [drm] drm/i915 developers can then reassign to the right component if it's not a kernel issue.
Aug  6 20:46:03 tux kernel: [41944.735578] [drm] The gpu crash dump is required to analyze gpu hangs, so please always attach it.
Aug  6 20:46:03 tux kernel: [41944.735579] [drm] GPU crash dump saved to /sys/class/drm/card0/error
Aug  6 20:46:03 tux kernel: [41944.735609] drm/i915: Resetting chip after gpu hang
Aug  6 20:46:03 tux kernel: [41944.735657] [drm] RC6 on
Aug  6 20:46:03 tux kernel: [41944.751494] [drm] GuC firmware load skipped
Aug  6 20:46:15 tux kernel: [41956.703339] drm/i915: Resetting chip after gpu hang
Aug  6 20:46:15 tux kernel: [41956.703385] [drm] RC6 on
Aug  6 20:46:15 tux kernel: [41956.719482] [drm] GuC firmware load skipped

However, after the GPU hangs, I can move only the mouse for some seconds while the rest of the screen is frozen and then the screen becomes blank (sometimes with a small _ in the upper left corner). After that, I can only do a hard reset (ctrl+alt+f2 with ctrl+alt+del does not reboot, but sometimes the power button works). When I restart, /sys/class/drm/card0/error states "no error state collected". I probably have to save the error state before the reboot, but I do not know how to do that exactly. Do you have any idea (something like putting a file in /etc/init.d/ that copies the state of /sys/class/drm/card0/error to some other file, but I'm not sure if that would be the right way to do it)? I would report this bug to bugs.freedesktop.org then.

I've tested this with both genkernel-4.9.16 and gentoo-sources-4.9.34, it occurs on both. However, I've never noticed this since February (with gentoo, though something similar happens sometimes after pm-hibernate) or last September (with archlinux). My GPU is i5-6200U, my laptop Thinkpad X1 yoga.

I wouldn't mind not using libreoffice or openoffice if abiword worked. But the document part of abiword starts flickering as soon as I start it, and using "GTK_THEME=Adwaita abiword" does not change anything...

I'm grateful for any ideas.

Best regards
bluesapphire

bluesapphire, i am sure that you can find out more here in the forum if you post the output to either or both of

Code:
emerge --info

as well as

Code:
emerge -pv libre-office [or][ open-office [actual package name is important]

If you feel so inclined to share your choice of graphics drivers, for this GPU.

Thanks

Put a .stop script in /etc/local.d/ to save the log somewhere and it'll be run automatically during shutdown.

Regarding graphics driver, do I have a choice there? I never really understood what was written in the wiki about intel graphics cards, so I put 'VIDEO_CARDS="intel i965"' in make.conf, without knowing if it was correct to write "i915/skl_dmc_ver1_26.bin" (or something completely different for my graphic card?) into CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE or not. Currently on genkernel, I left the field blank.

bluesapphire, if you have the lspci tool installed already, please print the output to the following, and if you like add some -v -vv or even -vvv if you can manage a way to show it:

Code:
root # lspci | grep -i VGA

NOTE: don't include the '#' or 'root' from the code above, the command is lspci and if you take a look at the man page it is also possible to print output for the device based on the 4 digit xx:xx device identifiers.

My mistake, what i meant to request was two commands consecutively but since i did not say that you gave the first one only, here is what you will need to post next (sorry for the hassle, what i want to know is the driver in use for your hd 570 intel graphics card)

Code:
lspci -d 00:02 -vv

That should work and if it does the last line should tell you the driver name but if it doesnt then you may need to take away a -v or add a -vvv (unlikely)

Also since there is no definitive evidence yet of VGA controller being an issue, I would recommend following advise of another forum member here to capture the log at the time of the hang (using a script if necessary to do the job).

And just as another way of doing something of a final check to make sure that the configuration setting for X.org is probably already but should be according to the manual for Gen4+ video cards (again i'm referring to this as the likely cause:

Quote:

Aug 6 20:46:03 tux kernel: [41944.735575] [drm] GPU HANG: ecode 9:0:0x85dffffb, in X [5050], reason: Hang on render ring, action: reset
Aug 6 20:46:03 tux kernel: [41944.735577] [drm] GPU hangs can indicate a bug anywhere in the entire gfx stack, including userspace.

Be sure to take a look and follow carefully the instructions for the newer generation of cards, https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Intel#xorg.conf_3

Then skip to the section about the Explicit driver settings, which I believe is going to be for your graphics card either to have it set as it is there modesetting. See if that does anything. Alternatively, if there is a need for the classical intel driver to work, check to see if you have installed the packages xf86-video-intel.

Luck

Thank you, I tried to use "lspci -d 00:02 -v" with one, two, three, four and none "v" but there is no output.

Does lshw help in this case (I've just searched for another way to find out the driver and it says driver=i915)?

lshw -class display

Code:
  *-display
       description: VGA compatible controller
       product: HD Graphics 520
       vendor: Intel Corporation
       physical id: 2
       bus info: pci@0000:00:02.0
       version: 07
       width: 64 bits
       clock: 33MHz
capabilities: pciexpress msi pm vga_controller bus_master cap_list rom
       configuration: driver=i915 latency=0
       resources: irq:124 memory:f0000000-f0ffffff[quote]

Capturing the log with a .stop script at /etc/local.d has worked. So I'll file a bug report tomorrow, if I have the time for it.

Based on the specific driver in use, and the information within the link that was previously posted from the wiki (about intel driver), be sure to check if xf86-video-intel package is installed. I have already seen another issue (from just today) that was fixed simply with the addition of this package. Wouldn't be surprised if it was the case again! :o

In video drivers 'intel' tells to use x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel driver while 'i965' tells to use new kernel modesetting driver and requires 'glamour' (openGL based 2D accelration) to be compiled for in xorg-server. If both are defined, i965 takes precedence.

BTW, what kernel are you using ? On my thinkpad X1 carbon I see GPU hangs on resume from hibernation with 4.9.34 but not with 4.9.16

Thank you all so much for your replies, it seems like installing xf86-video-intel and putting the following into /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ has solved the issue (probably installing xf86-video-intel would have been enough, but I did not have the patience to test it separately).

Code:
Section "Device"
   Identifier  "intel"
   Driver      "intel"
 EndSection

I'm not 100% sure if it really solved it, but I could write in libreoffice for the last two hours without a GPU hang, which definitely wasn't possible before. I hope that it stays that way. Finally, the bug had a very positive side effect for me: I know now that my writer's block is completely gone when I'm forced to write something in order to wait for a GPU hang :D

@dmpogo: For me, it occured on both 4.9.34 and 4.9.16. Regarding the resume from hibernate GPU hang, I have that too, but at least with genkernel it occurs on 4.9.16, too (although I can live with that because the workaround with using suspend instead of hibernate is too easy and similar issues happened to me with my last 3 laptops).

Just to be clear, bluesapphire is the problem still happening for you? I know what writers block can feel like, my best guess is that it is majorly in need of an outdoor activity for inspiring awe.

It really disappeared, I had finally enough time to test it for a few more hours yesterday :) Thank you very much for your help, I never would have thought I had to install xf86-video-intel.

Glad it did. I am a bit curious, why if your portage variable was set correctly then it wasn't already pulling in...but at least you found a fix. If you want to mark it as solved, that would be great. And then also be sure to identify the generation of chip being used for you Intel HD Graphics 520 and whether or not there is further compatibility with the newer driver called Modesetting DDX, but also requires some kernel configuring.

Have you given that a try?

With kernel 4.12.5 the GPU hangs seem to have completely vanished, even with the modesetting driver. Additionally, abiword does not flicker anymore :)

Furthermore, I've realized now that the issue really was the modesetting driver in kernel 4.9.16 and 4.9.34: In my first post, I did not have any file for the graphic card in /etc/X11/xorg.conf/, therefore (as dmpogo pointed out) the modesetting driver was used. Then, I installed x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel and put a config file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf/ for the intel driver, and the GPU hangs disappeared because the intel driver was used. When I changed "intel" to "modesetting" in the config file, the issue was there again.
