I mailed a Gentoo LiveCD to my host to boot my server so I can install Gentoo, but it turns out the CD doesn't include portage or zfs. I'd like to install zfs so I tried to extract a portage package from another install but I got this:

Short answer is not really. The best way is to perform a normal Handbook install from your booted Live CD.
Edit: Wait. I see. You shipped an install medium that doesn't support ZFS, right? Back when I did this, I used Catalyst to produce a minimal install CD with ZFS support. I think there are better alternatives now. Just checked SystemRescueCd and it does not yet support ZFS. Perhaps someone will chime in with a recommendation for a Live CD with ZFS support.
If I had to proceed with what you've delivered to your provider, I'd create a minimal working Linux with ZFS support on the server, leaving the majority of the space unpartitioned, boot into that, and then install your full (pure ZFS) Linux on the remaining space. Boot and swap partitions could remain the same.

I think that howto Installing SystemRescueCd on a USB stick work for this ISO

Those instructions are too extensive to relay to my host I think. No 1 or 2 liner for putting an ISO on a USB stick?
If not I should burn the Fearedbliss CD and mail it in. Thanks everyone! |

| You're welcome to send in another CD, but personally, I like John's approach. You could even extend it by saying that the temporary system will be placed in the partition that will ultimately become swap, so that when you use it to install the long term system, you can put all the filesystems where you want them and with the sizes you want. Then, when the long term system is ready to boot, boot it with no swap. Delete the temporary system and turn its storage into swap. Tell the long term system to use that space as swap. |
