So I am on a somewhat older Asus laptop with a resolution of 1366 x 768. Now I find myself having to zoom out the entire time. When I open a terminal i do ctrl + '-', when I open firefox i do ctrl + '-' and I wish I knew how to zoom out in gvim except there are no plugins that do so without having to specify a font yet... So basically I think that the text is too big for nearly all applications. Any clue as to how this has come to be and how to change it?

You want to read up on fonts. For instance, for my terminal I use rvxt-unicode and I can directly set the font used via my .Xresources file, e.g.,
Code:
URxvt*font: xft:Monaco:antialias=false:pixelsize=10

You also have a tool called eselect, use it like this:
Code:
eselect fontconfig list

This lets you enable/disable different fonts from the set of fonts from which things like Firefox makes its selections.

Fonts used to be a nightmare. It's pretty easy today, but there is some initial complexity you have to endure before it's all working well.

But it is not really the fonts that are the problem. Its the size of them. But then again maybe i should read up on it though I doubt the problem is nested there.

GNOME Tweak Tool -> Fonts -> Scaling Factor
That is a direct reply to your question. Does adjusting the configuration options present there fix your problem?
