Welcome to the forums.
I suggest you read the Gentoo Handbook. If it makes sense to you - go ahead with install. You do not need Gentoo for programming, though. Anything that runs on Gentoo can be used also with any other Linux distribution. _________________ My Gentoo installation notes.

ducnguyenit36,
Welcome to Gentoo.
You need to tell us more about why you selected Gentoo.
If its to learn about Linux, its a good choice.
Learning about Linux and learning about progranning at the same time will give you a lot to learn.
They are separate topics too.
If you can already program, Gentoo will teach you about Linux and provide a platform to improve your programming. _________________ Regards,

The only things you need to be able to use Gentoo are a lot of spare time and good research skills |

If you are newbie in system programming so you can choose whatever Linux distribution. Ubuntu, Debian are good choices.
At first you need 2 Os (Windows, Linux) on your desktop (or laptop), don't use VM. First step: try to install Gentoo on your machine.
If it takes much time to set up Gentoo Linux environment for programming, I suggest you to try with other Linux distro, it's easier. When you feel comfortable with Linux (don't need Windows for programming purpose) then you can come back with Gentoo, you will learn more from it. |

Gentoo from the get go, makes you understand the GNU compiler tool chain, dev libraries, their options etc.. a little overwhelming initially. But very useful know how applicable in any programming job in *ix. |
