Do not want to start openrc systemd flamewar.
I would like to know if Gentoo will keep supporting openRC for let's say the next 10 years?
Personally the migration from the basic openrc to the bloated systemd seems like; going with a rocket from earth (openrc) to space (systemd)
It seems like i was chilling in my house (with just openrc) then 10 people came to visit me (systemd) |

We can't predict what happens in next minute, how could anybody possibly know what happens in 10 years? Switching from one init system to another can be done according to administrator's preferences. As times change these preferences may change, too. _________________ My Gentoo installation notes.

Although there are no guarantees for the future, I think it likely that openrc will continue to be offered.
Now it may change and be offered as the 2nd or later choice instead of primary, but it should still be offered. _________________ UM780, 6.1 zen kernel, gcc 13, profile 17.0 (custom bare multilib), openrc, wayland |

There aren't many alternatives in Linux, and any of those may be as likely to switch as Gentoo - though I guess Devuan won't, bit it might be as likely to wither as Gentoo or Slackware to go pure-systemd. _________________ .sigs waste space and bandwidth |

Next 10 years? Gentoo's own service manager has been on life support for the past 5. One person cannot responsibly shepherd every single system in tree (while incidentally muscling their way into outright project ownership of one), but that's where we are now. |

I'm sorry. What's a service manager? |

A part of the system with clearly defined boundaries and responsibilities that runs on top of an init system. OpenRC was this until it started poorly reimplementing "cool" features from other software the current maintainer had been playing with. |

I am sure there will be plenty of systemd free options available including Gentoo or something based of it. |

Not forgetting that OpenRC is used in other operating systems too.
Wikipedia wrote: | OpenRC is the default init system of TrueOS, Gentoo, Alpine Linux, Parabola GNU/Linux-libre, Artix Linux and other unix-like systems, while some others like Devuan offer it as an option. That means that the software packages and daemons of those systems/distributions support it, coming with or using the available scripts. |

Moved from Installing Gentoo to Gentoo Chat as it is a discussion topic rather than a question of technical support.
EDIT:
In retrospect, I've split off 6 posts and merged them into The Politics of systemd Part 3.
Some were split only because they were related to other posts which needed to be in that thread. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |
