This looks like Gentoo bug #666732 and yes, bash is being forced.

I pretty much just mirror Gentoo for SpiderMonkey so sync up and try again.

Thanks for reminding me to check every GNOME release version against gnome-base/gnome (my last check was against gnome-base/gnome-light).

Turns out 4 GNOME release versions needed some fine-tuning (including yours).

Sync up and you should be good to go.

Hello.

Since this is my first post, dantrell thank you very much for your work!

I'm on 3.32 and I can't build x11-wm/mutter-3.32.1-r1:

Code:
meson.build:197:4: ERROR:  Problem encountered: The native backend requires udev to be enabled

x11-wm/mutter-3.32.1 built OK, but I had the problem that others have reported: I always end up with x11 although I have set up USE for wayland (and I was getting wayland up to 3.30).
I saw the hint to enable gles2 for mutter only after I had synced to x11-wm/mutter-3.32.1-r1.

emerge --info '=x11-wm/mutter-3.32.1-r1::dantrell-gnome-3-32':

Moreover, after boot I end up on vt1 and I have to do ctrl+alt+f7 to get to the gdm login screen (which shows up a few seconds after I have switched to vt7) -- I didn't see this being mentioned by others, I thought it was worth mentioning. I didn't have this problem with 3.30 or earlier.

I've got all issues described is previous post.

  • Boot on vt1
  • x11 while wayland is configured
  • Can't update mutter from 3.32.1 to 3.32.1-r1

Sync up and you should be good to go.

P.S. As I previously mentioned, I merged the gles2 USE flag into wayland for x11-wm/mutter.

The upstream code that caused this went live for GNOME 3.30 but no one reported an issue (if I recall correctly) so it's interesting that it crops up now. Please share the output of:

Code:
emerge --pretend --nodeps --verbose gnome-base/gdm

Additionally, if you have time, please sync up and try GDM 3.32 again as well as 3.30 and 3.28. It should be sufficient to downgrade GDM then restart the xdm service (adding the deleting the overlays as needed):

Code:
layman --add dantrell-gnome-3-30
emerge --ask --oneshot --nodeps --verbose =gnome-base/gdm-3.30.3-r2
eselect rc restart xdm
layman --delete dantrell-gnome-3-30

Code:
layman --add dantrell-gnome-3-28
emerge --ask --oneshot --nodeps --verbose =gnome-base/gdm-3.28.4
eselect rc restart xdm
layman --delete dantrell-gnome-3-28

After syncing, I confirm that mutter built OK and with gnome-base/gdm-3.32.0-r2 I get the expected behavior: go to gdm on vt7 after boot and get a wayland desktop.
Many thanks!

Here it is:
Code:

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

[ebuild   R    ] gnome-base/gdm-3.32.0-r2::dantrell-gnome-3-32  USE="elogind introspection ipv6 tcpd wayland -accessibility -audit -branding -fprint -plymouth (-selinux) -smartcard (-systemd) -test -xinerama" 0 KiB

I also tried gnome-base/gdm-3.30.3-r2 and gnome-base/gdm-3.28.4 as you asked and they both worked correctly.

All issues solved for me, thanks again!

Problems are also solved for me.
I've an other strange issue. After each reboot the sound level is not restored to latest state, but set to 0 (mute).

I've got this issue since 3.30 it disappear when I've updated to 3.32 and got it again with yesterday fixes.

What is very strange is that sound level is ok juste after login, but set to 0 few seconds after.

Any ideas? I doubt that this issue is related to "gnome without systemd" changes, it's more probably a gnome issue.

Wait, solved because GDM 3.32 works without manually switching VTs or solved because of downgrading to GDM 3.30/3.28? :o

Not familiar with this issue in relation to GNOME but it's definitely not related to my patchset.

It could be a GNOME issue like you guessed or maybe just a ALSA/Pulseaudio issue (like this one).

I setup a new box with plasma and some other apps. See world file below.
https://bpaste.net/show/be6142f0674a

Then I proceeded with adding dantrell-gnome and dantrell-gnome-3-32 overlay, changed to your provided combined plasma & gnome profile, added
Code:
USE="${USE} -ck elogind"
USE="${USE} egl wayland"

in make conf and then issued
Code:
emerge --ask --update --deep --changed-use --with-bdeps=y @world

which is resulting in the following dependency mess.

For the ffmpeg I remembered this thread so I added gst-plugins-libav to accept_keywords which removed ffmpeg conflicts
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1092394.html?sid=aad45f2ed1c3b02e056ef85d8ed01cea

I then upgraded glib and gtk+ followed by an emerge -1 --nodeps exo which removed finally all following conflicts.

NOTE: Use the '--verbose-conflicts' option to display parents omitted above

It may be possible to solve this problem by using package.mask to
prevent one of those packages from being selected. However, it is also
possible that conflicting dependencies exist such that they are
impossible to satisfy simultaneously.  If such a conflict exists in
the dependencies of two different packages, then those packages can
not be installed simultaneously. You may want to try a larger value of
the --backtrack option, such as --backtrack=30, in order to see if
that will solve this conflict automatically.

For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man
page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

!!! The following installed packages are masked:
- dev-libs/glib-2.58.3::gentoo (masked by: package.mask)
- x11-libs/gtk+-3.24.4-r1::gentoo (masked by: package.mask)

I thought, I should report this - just in case someone else hits this.

Thanks for clarifying. :)

I spun up a stage 3 tarball and checked the output of:

Code:
emerge --ask --update --deep --changed-use --with-bdeps=y @world gnome-base/gnome kde-plasma/plasma-meta

for the combined profile. It was still clean but the more populated the world file the more users may experience some slight turbulence. :twisted:

A rebuild of dev-libs/glib should resolve the issue with x11-libs/libxklavier although I can't be sure why the rebuild is necessary without seeming the full output of your initial emerge command.

Hi Dantrell, thanks. I rebuilt glib and above two packages could successfully build so the emerge process is continuing. I'll be back :twisted:

Edit to add from the build point of view, I can report that everything compiled fine. I just had to add the following in package.use
Code:
# required by media-gfx/simple-scan-3.32.2::dantrell-gnome-3-32[colord]
# required by gnome-base/gnome-extra-apps-3.32.0::dantrell-gnome-3-32[simple-scan]
# required by gnome-base/gnome-3.32.0::dantrell-gnome-3-32[extras]
# required by gnome (argument)
>=x11-misc/colord-1.3.5 vala

But I have got another problem with this box now, that root gets mounted as ro; I don't think, it is related with gnome without systemd, and I don't know yet, how to solve it.

I could re-establish mount of sda3 rw by switching back to plasma openrc profile followed by an emerge -e system. No idea what the heck could cause this.

This is an odd one. 8O

I seriously doubt it's related to my patchset or GNOME but it could be related to one of the non-GNOME packages in the generic overlay (of which there's only a handful).

What would be helpful is seeing the emerge output (with --verbose passed) of what would be downgraded when switching from the combined profile.

There's only a handful of packages it could be so I would try narrowing it down instead of issuing emerge -e system.

As an emerge -e system with staying at combined profile and having re-assured that everything is up to date by emerge --sync && layman -S && emerge world -uDNv && revdep-rebuild && etc-update && emerge --depclean && emerge @preserved rebuild did not help - still mounting / read only.

I switched to [50] dantrell-gnome-3-32:default/linux/amd64/17.0/desktop/gnome/3.32 (stable) *

Then the output of emerge world -uDnpv is:

Let me know if other infrmations would be needed. The above list still contains -ck +egl from make.conf that I had added according to setup instructions.

I'll emerge world -uDNav --with-bdeps=y && revdep-rebuild -i && emerge --depclean && etc-update && emerge @preserved-rebuild world and see what happens.

From the emerge output I see ~12 packages that could be the cause, however, what immediately stands out is sys-apps/openrc.

Next time you test the project overlays, try the latest version slotted in ~.

Code:
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~*" emerge --ask --oneshot sys-apps/openrc

Wait, I can test now, as the emerge did not went far because of gdk-pixbuf not compiling; I did not find the solution yet so I still have most of the overlay compiled. Re-adding overlays, switching profile n stuff, then I'll re-emerge openrc as suggested

Dantrell - you are my HERO :D

I only have remote access to the box at the moment. I did as you suggested, and emerged the following version of openrc and rebooted.
Code:
sys-apps/openrc
      Latest version available: 0.41.2
      Latest version installed: 0.41.2
      Size of files: 240 KiB
      Homepage:      https://github.com/openrc/openrc/
      Description:   OpenRC manages the services, startup and shutdown of a host
      License:       BSD-2

And guess what: mkdir /test did not tell me that / is mounted read only.

I still dont understand the issue though as on my main box I have stable version emerged and there it does not happen. But ok, it's not the same hardware, my main box is a ryzen box while this box here is intel. Should I file a bug?

I guess this is OpenRC issue #238 (which is fixed by commit 7cb8d94) so it could be due to your kernel version and/or boot mode.

Nope since this is technically my fault (sorry) because I intentionally keep OpenRC 0.29 as the stable version and slot everything newer in ~.

I need to either backport fixes as appropriate or stabilize something recent.

No problem.

P.S. You might want to update your other thread.

I decided to backport the fix and clear out the other versions in-between.

If you are exceptionally bored, let me know if 0.29-r1 works. :twisted:

With Gnome 3.32 my laptop backlight is not switched off after the timeout set in the energy settings.

The laptop backlight is controlled by the file
Code:
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness

The brightness control works fine and changes this value.

When the timeout for inactivity is reached the screen dims to black but the brightness value stays the same.
This results in a display that still has full brightness (and therefore consumes as much energy as before) but only shows a black image (plus the cursor).

What probably should happen is that the value is set to 0 after the screen was dimmed and is restored on wakeup.

I'm not entirely sure if this is caused by the update to 3.32 but I noticed it the first time after the update.

Hi dantrell, it doesn't. I proceeded and tested the versions in tree. Only

Code:
openrc-0.34.11.ebuild
openrc-0.38.3-r1.ebuild
openrc-0.38.3.ebuild
openrc-0.40.2.ebuild
openrc-0.40.3.ebuild
-> mount / readonly

Code:
openrc-0.41.1.ebuild
openrc-0.41.2.ebuild
openrc-0.41.ebuild
-> mount / rw

Someone else reported a similar issue but I'm not sure they initially experienced the issue on GNOME 3.32.

Either way, it's probably time to check for brightness-related changes between GNOME 3.30 and 3.32 (but like I said since I don't have an available laptop to test this with, I'd be working blind).

Thanks for narrowing it down.

That leaves ~40 commits to review.

You certainly still appreciate the day, I joined your overlay and started testing

Btw. I have setup tigervnc server on the new box, and I can successfully launch plasma and lxde with the following in the xstartup file of the corresponding user
Code:
#!/bin/sh
either startkde &
or startlxde &

But I am not able to find the correct way to launch gnome. Do you know what would be needed to launch it via vnc remote session? I tried gnome-session & but that only gives a black screen. Local login to gnome-shell work fine. And do you have an idea why sddm is just launching on a black screen now? I maybe will - out of curiosity - try if that problem persists when not having installed your overlay thus switch to standard plasma profile temporarly. As gdm is working fine, I at least have a workaround for using either gnome or plasma from local login, but ironically I cannot launch gnome session but I can launch plasma session while accessing the box through its tigervnc server. If I can remotely login to an existing local X session, I could workaround this by configuring a local autologin to gnome followed by an access to this established session by vnc, but I dont know yet, if vnc can do this.
