|
|
Hello,
I would like to create a bootable key using unetbootin to install my daughter PC (Ubuntu).
Even if all is copied correctly on the key, it doesn't boot : it seems the mbr is not copied
I'm using root account and sys-boot/unetbootin-661::gentoo which is raising :
Code: |
Qt: Session management error: Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed |
at startup (but I don't think it's related) and
Code: |
QIODevice::read (QFile, ":/mbr.bin"): device not open
|
when writing.
Any Idea ?
Thanks

I was getting the same message when trying to install FreeDOS on a USB. My resulting USB was not bootable.
A Google search only found your post and the code for unetbootin itself. Looking at the code, it seems to be trying to get mbr.bin from the /usr/share/syslinux/ folder, so I installed syslinux. The message remains even though the file is now there! Looking more carefully at the code, it just seems to be copying the mbr.bin to the beginning of the target USB, so I did that myself manually:
Code: | dd if=/usr/share/syslinux/mbr.bin of=/dev/sdd |
(my USB was on /dev/sdd, yours may not be, obviously)
Unfortunately, this didn't make my USB bootable, but it might be worth trying for you.
Good luck. |

Same error here with unetbootin-661. Updating to latest version 675 (using accept keyword) helped in my case. |

dd is a very simple tool. If you don't have a precomposed filesystem image to dd to the device, it won't help you. It looks like UNetbootin is intended to provide two things over dd: moderate transforms to make a live CD into a live USB; support for using a non-Linux system to prepare a live USB. I don't know if it does either of those well, but if it does, that is a good niche to have filled. |

Our OP wanted to install Ubuntu. To my knowledge all Ubuntu and other mainstream Linux install images already come USB ready and this means dd will do just great. And even if the image is not ready for USB then isohybrid can be used to prepare it. The -u switch makes it UEFI compatible if desired.
Code: | isohybrid -u isoimage |
